Inquiry

Inquiry is about what learners do, it involves lots of connected skills, dispositions and processes. Inquiry is fluid, challenging, messy and complex.

It is not a planned process that is planned and worked through in a linear way.

The biggest challenge for teachers is the way we scaffold our own planning and teaching without it being too planned.

We are sharing some ideas and Inquiry model to help guide our thinking and teaching practice beyond just providing activities but moving students thinking from the known to the unknown.

A very important part of Inquiry teaching is the teacher's own reflection of where the inquiry is going and where will our next steps be. We want to encourage wonder, patterns, seek new information, connect to prior knowledge and transfer this new learning/knowledge to other aspects of life.t

Provocations

Provocations provoke thoughts, discussions, questions, interests, experiments, creativity and ideas.

There are lots of different provocations:

Interesting photos, Pictures, books, nature, conceptual ideas, e.g.changing seasons, light etc, an object e.g. magnets or maps, Questions, e.g. what is gravity?, and event or a class trip.

Provocations need to be open ended and be able to be explored.

Then you can use the model of I see. I think, I wonder.

Teachers listen to and record responses to the provocation and you can find your inquiry focus.

Then you can move into what concepts underpin this inquiry, e.g. Planet Earth and Beyond, how does it fit with the NZC and the Local Curriculum, why is it worth working on and why does it matter?

Hoiho Inquiry

Earth’s system is a small part of a solar system universe.

On clear nights we can see star patterns in the sky

The Earth takes one year to orbit around the sun and spins

The Earth spins on its axis once every twenty four hours giving day to the parts that face the sun and night to the parts that face away from the sun.

Light travels in straight lines, can explore shadows to reinforce this concept.

The sun is the star closest to the Earth

Context for inquiry/Big Idea: Planet Earth and beyond

  1. The sun is the centre of our solar system
  2. Various cultures have used patterns in the sky to measure time, navigate by and indicate when is the best time to plant crops, harvest, fish etc. Most cultures have created myths around these patterns (Matariki)

Key concepts:

  1. Our night and day are caused by the Earth's spin and the sun travelling in straight lines.
  2. Our seasons are caused by the Earth’s tilt and its orbit around the sun.
