Observing in Nature

Explore in your backyard or park. Walk around and enjoy your outdoor place. Notice any areas that might feel good to make your Sit Spot. This spot will be your place to sit each time you visit, observing and exploring. When you return, talk about the things you observed.

Journaling about Nature

Sit quietly for 10 minutes. What do you See? Close your eyes. What do you hear? What do you feel? After 10 minutes, draw and write about it in your journal or fold a blank paper into four sections to make a 4 box job. In one box, write what you saw, in another what you felt, in another what you smelled, in another what heard. You can do one sense a day for 4 days, or all in one day.

Listen to the story. Draw a picture and/or write about how you could be a secret helper in your house. How would you help?

MATH

Non-standard units of measurement-choose something that you have multiples of: blocks of equal size, paper clips, feet (footsteps), dried spaghetti noodles, silverware

Have child measure objects, length of room, width of table, etc. using non-standard units of measurement. (ex. The living room is 21 footsteps long. The hallway is 6 spaghetti noodles wide. The pencil is 5 paper clips long).

Measuring length/width/height with a measuring instrument:Ruler, yardstick, and/or tape measure

Have your child measure various items around the house. Show them how they must have the beginning of the measuring instrument at the beginning of the object they are trying to measure. Show them how to look at the numerals to read the measuring instrument.

Measuring liquids with measuring cups/measuring spoons

Measuring cups and measuring spoons, water, glass jars, milk jugs, other containers, sponge, bucket, dishtowel

Let your child experiment with measuring liquids. They can do this activity in an empty bathtub or sink to catch spills or have them clean up spills with a sponge, bucket, and towel.

Count as high as you can with your child. Count to 100 and beyond..

MATH

Greater Than, Less Than, Equal to

Get a deck of cards. Remove face cards. Shuffle and divide the remainder of the deck between you and your child. Each of you flip a card. Take turns saying, “4 is less than 5,” “5 is greater than 4” or if two numbers are equal, say, “7 is equal to 7.” Repeat with the rest of the deck.

Gather 10 items (toilet paper rolls, empty water bottles, aluminum cans, etc.) to use as “bowling pins.” Set up “pins,” use a ball to roll and knock down pins. Write number sentences to record. For instance if you knock down 7 pins (10-7=3), if you knock down 4 pins (10-4=6).

Place Value

Get a deck of cards and remove face cards. If your child is working on 0-9 make one pile of cards face down. If you child is working on 10-99, make 2 piles of cards face down. If your child is working on 3 digit numerals, divide your cards into 3 piles face down. If your child is working on 4 digit numerals, divide your cards into 4 piles.

Flip one card from each pile to compose a numeral (ex. 6 or 42 or 723 or 9354). Have child read the numeral and write it.

Write the following numerals on a piece of paper:

Salty (salt water)

Bitter (coffee or unsweetened baker’s chocolate)

Glass of water

Let them taste a small amount (1/8 t) of the first liquid.

Ask your child what it tastes like.

Tell your child, “That taste is called sour.” “Can you think of some other things that taste sour?”

Have child take a drink of water between tastes..

MATH

Five Senses Math

Sit still outside, silently. Just notice things. Notice what senses you are using. What can you hear, smell, feel, see or taste (the air) ? Fold a piece of paper into four. Write hear, see, feel, smell. Tally how many things you hear, see, feel, and smell.

Bingo

You and/or your child make a bingo card for everyone who wants to play. Use the #s your child is working on. (ex. 0-9, the teens, 10-99, #s greater than 100) Write the same #s on little papers. Turn the little papers upside down. Pick a #. Put a coin, cheerio, etc. on that square. The first to get a row across, down, or diagonal shouts bingo!

Count & Toss

Get 4 containers (buckets, large bowls, waste baskets, boxes, etc). Clothespin a # to each one. Kids try to toss the correct # of balls -or wadded up paper- into each container.

Make It Game

Get 4 containers (buckets, big bowls, waste baskets, boxes, etc). Clothespin a “make it” paper to each container. Ex.-”make it 10”, “make it 5”, “make it 8”,” make it 14”. Put some balls (or wadded up paper) into each container. The child looks inside and decides whether to add or subtract balls in order to make the container equal to the # on the card. Help the child think about and write the equation after each one.

Beat the Clock

Get 4 containers (buckets, large bowls, waste baskets, boxes, etc). Clothespin a # on each one. The child has to run and put that many balls (wadded up papers) in each container to beat the clock-only carrying 2-3 at a time.

Addition Beat the Clock

Get 4 containers (buckets, large bowls, waste baskets, boxes, etc). Clothespin an addition problem to each one. The child has to run and put that many balls (wadded up paper) into each container to beat the clock- only carrying 2-3 at a time. They can write the equations at the end of the game.

Subtraction Beat the Clock

Get 4 containers (buckets, waste baskets, boxes, large bowls, etc). Clothespin a subtraction problem to each one. Start with that # of balls (wadded up paper) in each container. Ex. 7-2 = would have 7 balls in the container, 5-3= would have 5 balls in the container. The child has to remove the allotted balls for the problem and see how many are left-and run across the room to beat the clock! They can write the equations at the end of the game.
