Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

Regularly sleeping 6 hours per night during adolescence doubles the risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety one year later.

Regularly getting too little sleep makes learning more difficult and impairs logical thinking and concentration.

Roberts & Duong, 2014; Roberts & Duong, 2017

Ribeiro & Stickgold, 2014, Yoo et al., 2007

Sleep deprivation increases bullying on social media due to impaired impulse control and increased irritability.

Sleep deprivation is common

Almost one third of girls (29%) sleep less than 6 hours per night, which is nearly twice as common as among boys (16%).

Almost two out of three (60%) ninth graders reported sleeping less than 8 hours per night on average.

Data from a representative survey of 610 ninth-grade students, collected between December 2021 and January 2022.

What do your sleep and evening routines look like?

Discussion question for you as guardians:

  1. How many hours does your child sleep on a typical weekday?
  2. Do you think their phone or gaming affects their sleep?
  3. What does the evening routine with digital media look like? Where is the phone charged?

Why is sleep important for the brain?

When we sleep 8–10 hours per night (the recommendation for ages 13–17):

  • Sleep helps us process the day's experiences and consolidate what we’ve practiced.
  • It restores our capacity to learn new things!
  • Our immune system is strengthened, keeping us healthier.
  • Hormones that support growth are produced.
  • Our ability to think clearly and find new perspectives improves.
  • We gain the energy to do things we enjoy and that make us feel good.

Why is sleep important for the brain?

Otherwise…

  • The brain becomes more driven by emotions, making us easily irritated, sensitive, and sad.
  • We tend to withdraw and also find it harder to concentrate and learn.

Many students wish for more involved parents/guardians.

"I'm on my phone all the time at home, probably about 7 hours a day. I wish my parents would tell me to put it down so I can get started with studying."
