Ancient Civilization Picture

Ancient Civilization Reflection

Paragraph #1- Explain what everything symbolizes in your picture.

In the picture there are houses, farms for both plants and animals, churches, walls, and rivers. The houses to provide shelter for the citizens, the farms to provide a sustainable food source to keep them from having to move from place to place. Churches or other areas of worship to incorporate religion. Walls to fend off attackers and wild animals and rivers as water source to keep themselves hydrated.

Paragraph #2- Explain the difference between a neolithic society and a Paleolithic society. Name one invention that assisted the most with this transition. Neolithic society was more advanced and centered around staying in one place rather than moving from area to area. One tool that was used in the neolithic era was parchment that was used to write and communicate.

Paragraph #3- After our discussion, What did your group forget to add in the civilization? If you did not forget anything, what was your thought process to determine what you’d need?

Early Pastoralists:

1. What are pastoralists? When, why, and in what areas did they emerge?

2. Describe pastoralist tribes and clans.

3. Describe gender equity in pastoral societies. What is an egalitarian society? A society where men and women are treated the same.

4. Describe the onset of Trade between nomadic and sedentary groups.

5. What impacts did pastoralists have on the environment?

Early Pastoralists Answers:

1: Pastoralists are groups of people that keep herds of animals rather than farm traditional plants, fruits, vegetables, etc. They started preferring animals over vegetables because in the areas that they were like eurasia the climate made it difficult for plants to grow.

2:The tribes were nomadic moving from place to place, they often had difficulties when in confrontations with opposing tribes and would fight frequently.

3:The early tribes were fairly equal when it came to womens rights. They were what you’d call egalitarian(A society where men and women are treated the same.)

4: Early Pastoralists would actually trade pretty frequently with settled groups because thery moved so frequently and through many different areas that they would pickup unique things from different settlements and trade them to others.

5: Early pastoralists frequently left a negative impact on the environment because they would move to one area take all the nutrients there and then move on to another area doing the same.

Greece Answers: Greece was a democracy any free man above the age of 18 could vote and affect the laws that were passed in that poleis.

First and most obvious is democracy which is our current form of government.

Secondly the olympics which originated in olympia.

Rome Answers: Rome’s political structure has changed and evolved over many years but one thing that has been a frequent appearance in history is a leader who must communicate and work with a group of senators.

A religious turmoil and irony in rome was the persecution of christians for years and years and then the switch to making christianity the main religion and persecuting those who didn't follow it.

Describe your choice of the Thesis statement formulas:

List your best Thesis Statement:

Reflection Answers (Must be detailed and at least one paragraph per response): The neolithic revolution caused injustices within religions, social classes and genders because the neolithic revolution caused major advancements in agriculture and technology leading to certain people who had early access to such technologies gaining power over those who didn't have such technology. When those who gained power over others realized that they had the ability to they then felt entitled to impose their will on those “beneath” them. This is what we saw with leaders such as Nero with Christianity, As well as the male leaders to the women in Athens. Another example is the Caste system in hinduism, people who gained power early on made a system that mainly benefited them but everyone below them had to follow.

An early example of neolithic technology is irrigation, irrigation is a way of bringing water to crops to keep them nurtured. Irrigation was an incredibly helpful early invention that revolutionized farming as we knew it. This also skyrocketed the efficiency of farming.

International trade routes rose alongside the rise of great empires such as rome and asia. Rome had revolutionized the construction of roads paving them and using new and better materials such as crushed up stones that made an early form of cement. They had a road network that spanned across 50,000 miles. Alongside the many asian empires that supported the construction of the silk road which spanned across 5,000 miles. The construction of these two roads alongside many more helped traveling people such as nomadic pastoralists to travel between empires spreading influence from ones that they came from.

A decentralized government is a government that spreads its power throughout many different people rather than one person holding all the power. Rome is a great example of this because they were one of the first to do it. They had a a group of senators called patricians they also had consules who only had 1 term of electedness. They had all this alongside one person who was in main title of leader. A centralized government would be like an empire. Some countries that were empires were rome(in the later years) and China.

Centralized(A government where all the power is held in one place), Triumvirat(Three powerful men in power in ancient rome), Caste System(The religious class system followed by hindu’s), Acropolis(The heightened area in greek cities where temples and places of ritual were built.) , Polytheism(The belief in many Gods), Monotheism(The belief in only one God)

SAQ Response: One continuity in the political system of China in the period 1200-1750 is the civil service exam. The civil service exam was a test that was taken by people hoping to get into government positions. The exam was implemented by the Han dynasty circa 202 CE. The civil service exam was implemented under the Han dynasty but did not last when China was taken over by the mongols. It was re-implemented under the Ming dynasty(1368-1444) and lasted until 1905.

One change in the political system of China during the period of 1200 - 1750 was the introduction of copper and silver as the primary form of currency. Silver and copper coins were popularized by europeans. Furthermore when silver was found in the americas during european expeditions was when china became interested in using those coins within their economy. Traditionally trade was done through an exchange of goods however under the Qing dynasty(1644 - 1911) the use of copper and silver coins became a common practice.

One way political continuities such as china influenced the development of the global economy with the period of 1200 - 1750 is the endorsement of the silk road. The silk road was a large trade route that spanned from europe to asia. It connected multiple kingdoms and countries and lasted 1500 years. This is an example of a political continuity because throughout the many years different dynasties that ruled over china the silk road continued to be supported and maintained.

Renaissance Answers:

  1. Prior to the Renaissance in Europe, beliefs and religion held significant sway over society. The Catholic Church, as the dominant religious institution, wielded immense influence over various aspects of life, including politics, culture, education, and morality. Religious teachings were integral to societal norms, guiding individuals' behavior and shaping the worldview of the masses. Additionally, advancements in science, exploration, and the dissemination of knowledge through the printing press led to increased curiosity, critical thinking, and a desire for empirical evidence, gradually eroding the unquestioned authority of religious doctrine and facilitating the cultural transformation seen during the Renaissance.

2. The agricultural society had a profound impact on Europe, shaping its social, economic, and cultural landscape for centuries. It led to the establishment of feudalism, a hierarchical system where land ownership and labor were central, fostering a rigid social structure. Agricultural advancements increased food production, supporting population growth and enabling specialization in other fields like trade and craftsmanship. However, the shift from an agricultural society began with the commercial and urban expansion of the late Middle Ages, fueled by factors such as trade, the rise of cities, technological innovations like the printing press, and the gradual decline of feudalism. This shift set the stage for the transition to a more commercial, urban-centered, and economically diverse society that characterized the later periods of European history.

Columbian Exchange Cook-off Reflection

  1. Explain the Grade Level project and what you are doing in each class.
  2. How did the field trip to NoMas and the High Museum prepare you for the cookoff?
  3. Describe the columbian Exchange. Also, describe the impact that the Columbian Exchange had on indigenous populations and culture.
  4. Was it difficult to cook with foods from one hemisphere? How did your food taste? What ingredients do you wish that you could add?
  5. What is your favorite meal? Explain the ingredients and what hemisphere each item comes from.

Reflection Answers: The grade level project is a mix between explaining and solving food deserts and food swamps as well as explaining the columbian exchange. In classes like math we are working on solving and describing food deserts, in art we are demonstrating food deserts through placemats using repetition and other tools as well as using ceramics to make creations similar to the columbian exchange. In literature we are making meals using ingredients from the columbian exchange, in Ap we had a cookoff using ingredients from the columbian exchange. Going to NoMas helped me see foods with different ingredients than i'm used to cooking with. The columbian exchange was the movement of foods, ideas, and diseases from europe and and the americas. It impacted them both positively and poorly, the foods and ideas helped their civilizations modernize but the pathogens hurt their populations severely due to them not being used to it. I cooked with ingredients from the eastern hemisphere and it wasn't difficult just a little random I don’t think i'd have changed anything. My favorite meal is beef and broccoli the beef is from the east and the rice is from the east. I don't know all the ingredients that go into the sauce but id presume they are also from the east because its an eastern meal.

SHORT ANSWER QUESTION #1 ~

Political Revolutions Answer Parts a, b, and c using the following political revolutions.

American Revolution

French Revolution

Haitian Revolution

a. Identify ONE way in which The Enlightenment influenced the development of political revolutions in the period from 1750 – 1900. A. One way the enlightenment influenced the development of political revolutions between the years 1750-1900 was through new ideas considering government. The enlightenment was a period of time in which many great thinkers including the likes of John Locke and Voltaire produced their ideas regarding government and how it should change and or stay the same. One of the new ideas regarding government that were produced during the enlightenment was the idea of three branches of government which was thought of by montisque. This influenced political revolutions becasue it was the building block of the american revolution.

b. Identify and explain ONE similarity between two of the political revolutions listed above. One similarity between the american revolution and the french revolution was the rebelling due to war debts. Both the French and American revolutions stemmed from war debts obtained from partaking in wars and spending more money then they had. Great Britain took hand in the seven years war putting them in great debt and France took part in the american revolution. Both countries were put in great debt due to this and resolved to fix this debt by levying more taxes on the common or poor folk. These wars are similar because both were caused by the unfair taxation of common or poor folk.

c. Identify and explain ONE difference between two of the political revolutions listed above.

What is the Age of Absolutism? What caused it? What effect did it have? Absolutism is the idea that a monarch or one ruler should have all the power within the government. Because of the protestant reformation there were multiple bloody battles in the name of religion, as well as religion losing its hold on society due to the renaissance. The effect of absolutism is demonstrated by the countries that still remain. Formerly absolute monarchies are now constitutional monarchies.

Identify and explain ONE cause of WWI in Europe. One cause of WW1 in europe was the alliance system. The alliance system was a system in which countries who had alliances with each other would act in each others favor. This was the situation with World War 1 once one country declared war then all of its fellow allies did as well.

b. Identify and explain ONE factor that made WWI a global conflict. One factor that made WW1 a global conflict was imperialism. Imperialism is the strengthening of one's country through the taking of territory whether through diplomacy or through military conquests. This was a factor that made WW1 a global conflict because the colonies that these imperialistic countries had previously taken over all over the world contributed to the war effort.

c. Identify and explain ONE effect of WWI OUTSIDE of Europe. One effect of WW1 outside of europe was the stock market crash in the US. The stock market crash was a catastrophic event within the US which greatly contributed to the Great Depression. This was an effect outside of europe because due to the billions of dollars germany had to pay in reparations they were unable to pay france they were unable to the US, making the US stock market crash.
