Ancient Civilization Picture

Ancient Civilization Reflection

At the top, the playdough cup represented a watchtower for our farm/crops which is in the smallbox at the top. The playdough balls represent soldiers, and the orange ball is a government building or a capital. There is a lake in the middle which serves as our main water source and there are also paths leading to the entrance of our civilization. Below the lake, there are homes for people to live. Surrounding our civilization, there is a strong barrier which keeps everyone safe.

In a neolithic society, agriculture was prominent and helped feed many citizens. In a paleolithic society, people were mostly hunters and gatherers. They were nomadic and moved to their food source which led to overgrazing. If they continued this practice, it would ultimately lead to starvation if a neolithic society wasn’t adapted. Stone tools were important to help with the transition from a neolithic society to a paleolithic society

Our group forgot to add a verbal and written language. This is crucial for creating a functioning society. We included things like government and clear, strong boundaries. This is important to establish laws and to rid of enemies. We make sure to incorporate things from modern day society into our model civilization.

Early Pastoralists:

1. What are pastoralists? When, why, and in what areas did they emerge?

2. Describe pastoralist tribes and clans.

3. Describe gender equity in pastoral societies. What is an egalitarian society?

4. Describe the onset of Trade between nomadic and sedentary groups.

5. What impacts did pastoralists have on the environment?

Early Pastoralists Answers:

  1. Pastoralists are people who are nomadic and move with their herds and food. They emerged in Eurasia in the grasslands and highlands because the dry climate made it difficult to grow crops. They emerged in early Neolithic times.
  2. Clans were made up of extended families while tribes were made up of multiple clans. Clans apart of a tribe would meet at times (once a year for instance) to trade and deal with tribal matters.
  3. Depending on the clan, women had more respected positions in pastoral societies. In all groups, though, leadership roles were usually held by men. An egalitarian society is when everyone is considered equal regardless of age, gender, etc.
  4. Nomads traveled a lot which caused them to trade a lot with settlers. This also helped the spread use of wheels, chariots, horse riding, and more. They traded with sedentary groups which made great relationships among the groups
  5. Pastoralists often had herds that would favor certain plants over others which led to overgrazing. Pastoralists also used fire to create pastures from forests, preventing forests from growing and caused erosion.

Things like architecture (columns), language (alphabet), philosophy, government (democracy), and the calendar have carried on to our current society

Rome Answers:

In Rome, people voted on people who would vote on their behalf. This was done by the 300 people in the Senate. Only Patricians were in the Senate. There were people called Tribunes who spoke out against this political system and were assassinated. A civil war occurred after this and the Plebeians were created 12 tablets to protect Plebeians and Patricians

In Rome, people were mainly polytheistic and didn’t believe in God. Christians were heavily persecuted because of their beliefs .

Unit Zero Reflections for learning journal, Portfolio, and notebook:

  • Describe how the neolithic revolution led to injustices within religions, social classes, and between genders. Please provide examples for each analysis.
  • Describe early neolithic technology and inventions. Please provide examples for each analysis.
  • Describe the rise of Interregional trade routes and how that led to the spread of religions. Give examples.
  • Explain the difference between centralized and decentralized governments. Please give examples of each.
  • List and explain six (6) significant terms that you should remember going into Period 1.

This is my best written thesis statement:

Teenagers enjoy being on their phones. However, phones can lead to added stress, learning issues, and hinders social skills. Therefore, granting teenagers 24 hour access to their phones can be damaging to teen’s health

Describe the SAQ Formula:

Answer, define, explain

Describe your choice of the Thesis statement formulas:

I choose the second formula

Although X (counter point), Y (your point) because ABC (evidence).

Reflection Answers (Must be detailed and at least one paragraph per response):

  1. The Neolithic revolution, a time for rapid growth, led to large, crowded cities. People transitioned from hunting and gathering to farming for their food. The neolithic revolution also led to injustice in the religious, social, and gender sense. Instead of being nomadic (constantly moving around), people were sedentary (stayed in one place) which led to class systems. Lower classes were given more grunt work while upper classes were given more leadership positions like rulers and priests. The higher classes were treated better and were given more respect. Gender roles also started to emerge in patriarchal societies. This resulted in men getting more glorified jobs and women given more domestic jobs. Lastly, religion was used to justify how people were treated. In Hinduism, there was a caste system. The caste system was also used to mistreat people based on where they stood in their caste.
  2. There were many new technological advancements in the neolithic time period. Fire was was very important because it was used to cook food. In the Paleolithic revolution, people were not absorbing nutrients because they were not cooking their food. This allowed people to get the nutrients they needed. Also the wheel was an important invention because it was used to transport goods.
  3. The rise of interregional trade routes was caused by the trades of goods that were native to a certain area like silk. The Silk Road was a trade route that connected Asia and Europe. Silk was created in China and creating silk was a very secret process. The Trans Saharan trade routes were also prevalent and contributed to the spread of religion through colonization and slavery. Religion and beleifs were spread while merchangs traded goods.
  4. A centralized government is when a leader has the most power and does not utilize the public’s approval. A decantralized government is when there is a transfer of power from a higher government to a lower form of government. An example of a centralized government is the Qin dynasty. In the Qin dynasty, Shi Huang Di was responsible for making all of the decisions for China at the time. A decentralized government would be Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece was made up of poleis which governed themselves. The geography of Greece made it hard for different people from different poleis to communicate. Each polis had their own ruler, rules, and government but they still had similar characteristics.
  5. Important terms to remember going into period 1 are Neolithic, Paleolithic, diffusion, democracy, social injustice, and domesticated. These terms are very important because they can be used to describe how many things that happened in ancient times effect people today. The neolithic revolution was something that advanced society greatly. Diffusion describes how cultures merge. Democracy, which began in Greece, is the basis of many modern governments. Social injustice is how different people are treated worse based on their gender, race, or social class. Finally, domestic/domestication describes the jobs women were given in neolithic times and also describes how wild animals were being integrated into society.

Kievan Rus helped to link the Baltic and Black sea. Also, the Kievan Rus traded with Constantinople and was very powerful. The Ukrainian war is mostly about the land between Ukrainians and Russians. The current leader of Russia thinks that Ukrainian people are Russian but Ukrainians refer to Kyiv (Capital of Kievan Rus) their nation. Here is my Western Europe note sheet.

  1. What were the major political changes in Western Europe from 1200- 1450 (Be detailed)?

From 1200 to 1450, the rise and fall of feudalism occurred. Feudalism was when people reported directly to a king. After this, manorialism came into effect. This entailed making money on the land and the use of coinage.

  • Describe some social and cultural changes in Western Europe from 1200-1450.

The estates general formed in France and was a system where you can see social classes forming (Clergy (0.5%) → nobility (1.5%)→ and everyone else (98%)). Also, the Magna Carta was a document written in 1215 that outlined the specific rights and duties popes, priests, and monarchs had to observe.

Here is my Renaissance Note Sheet

  1. What impact did religion have on European society prior to the Renaissance? What caused a shift?

Almost all art featured religious components and focused on Christianity. Humanism led to a more secular society and caused people to not focus on religion rather than the world around them.

  • What effect did the agricultural society have on Europe? What caused a shift?

The feudal structure was used where people were paid in food and land in exchange for service. The black plague caused the shift from the feudalist society to a manorial society as peasants and serfs more bargaining power

  • How do you group documents?

Step 1: Break down the question

  • Determine if secular or Christian philosophies had the biggest impact on the Renaissance

Step 2: Start reading the documents to see how you can use them to answer the question (write notes)

  • Doc 1: The artist is inspired by Christianity because it talks about Mary and Jesus
  • Doc 2: Religion and gods creation of man is used to justify the dominance and intelligence of man. This was a public speech. He leans more toward christianity though because he continues to credit God
  • Doc 3: A humanist author wrote a fictional text, Utopia. His idea of a Utopia is that people shouldn’t be persecuted for their religious beliefs but should be held accountable for inciting a rebellion. It is influenced by religion because he is applying it to religion
  • Doc 4: Doc is about secular ideas, and is not religious. Not based on Christianity
  • Doc 5: Most likely designed by a Renaissance artist, a church. Definitely religious

Step 3: Determine your answer

Although secular philosophies had a great impact on the Renaissance, Christianity had the heaviest impact because a, b, c

Step 4: Determine your groups (A, B, C,)

Group A (P1): Docs 1, 2, & 3 - religious writings and texts that use humanist intellect and discourse to verify religious concepts

SAQ Response:

3.

  1. One continuity in the political system of China from 1200-1750 is the use of Neo Confucianism. Neo Confucianism was used in China and was a syncretic combination of Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism. Neo Confucianism was a continuity because it remained constant in China and influenced writings and policies
  2. One change in the political system of China from 1200-1750 is the end of the Mongol reign. The Mongol rule caused many traditional Chinese values to be destroyed like the civil service exams and bureaucracy. The Ming dynasty was a change because they reinstated these values to return to a more traditional China.
  3. One way political continuities remained as China influenced the development of the global economy from 1200-1750 is the organized government. The government remained strong throughout the Ming dynasty with the enforcing of queues, which was when someone's hair was shaved in the front and left down in the back. The government continuously kept the population organized and kept the society controlled

Renaissance Answers:

1. Before the Renaissance, the Black death was rampant and society was dominated by the Catholic Church. Europe was also going through the Dark ages which is a time where new thoughts and ideas did not advance. Also, most of the art and architecture was influenced by Christian ideals. One thing that led to the Renaissance were the crusades which were wars between Christians and Muslims to stop the expansion of Islam. The shift to the Renaissance led to more secular ideas in society along with secular art and architecture

2. The agricultural society was dominated by feudalism, which was a system where people were given land and protection from people of a higher rank, and fought for them in return. The shift out of feudalism was caused by the black plague and led to manorialism which was a system where people lived on a manor/estate and peasants, serfs, and free laborers worked on the land.

Columbian Exchange Cook-off Reflection

  1. Explain the Grade Level project and what you are doing in each class.
  2. How did the field trip to NoMas and the High Museum prepare you for the cookoff?
  3. Describe the columbian Exchange. Also, describe the impact that the Columbian Exchange had on indigenous populations and culture.
  4. Was it difficult to cook with foods from one hemisphere? How did your food taste? What ingredients do you wish that you could add?
  5. What is your favorite meal? Explain the ingredients and what hemisphere each item comes from.

Reflection Answers:

  1. For our grade level project, we were required to use our different courses to collaborate and think critically about how food impacts others in the past, present, and future. In AP World History, we learned about the Columbian exchange. We used our knowledge of the Columbian exchange to choose ingredients from each hemisphere to compete in a cook off based on the ingredient you chose and which hemisphere you were assigned. In Visual Art, we researched about ancient civilizations and chose one to incorporate into our pottery designs. We were instructed to make a tablescape that represents an ancient pottery style (my group chose Native American) and we learned how to glaze pottery and properly construct it. In World Literature, we read How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents. This book is all about identity and we were assigned to create a recipe that related to our identity. My group decided to make banana crumb muffins to relate to banana pudding during the holidays. In Spanish, we were instructed to create menus that included foods from pre hispanic culture and also had to create a dish that was a medley between two different cultures. Finally, in Chemistry, we learned about bonding and how they related to food. We did a project where we had to explain bonds and think critically about how bonds and food relate.
  2. The trip to NoMas was very fun and engaging. I really enjoyed eating in a restaurant with my classmates and also being able to discuss in Spanish with my Spanish teacher about what I ordered. I think the trip helped me think of things to create for the cook off because there was an extensive menu. I also think seeing food from a different culture helped me see easy to use ingredients differently.
  3. The Columbian Exchange was a transfer of food, animals, disease, and culture from the Old World (Europe, Africa, Asia) to the New World (The Americas) and from the New World to the Old World. The Columbian exchange was damaging to indigenous communities because people from the Old World brought over diseases to the New world which wiped out a lot of the population since they were not exposed to the same germs from the colonizers.
  4. It wasn’t that hard to cook with foods from one hemisphere. One reason is because I had the Eastern hemisphere which had a lot of meats and there was a lot of room for versatility. Another reason why it wasn’t too hard to cook with foods from one hemisphere was because I use many ingredients in my everyday life which allowed me to figure out what to make easily. Our food tasted well; we made meatballs and a peach and orange salad. I think I would add rice to our dish because it would’ve brought everything together I feel. Also, rice comes from the Eastern hemisphere but it was not assigned to my group. I think if my group had rice, my dish would have fit together better.
  5. My favorite meal is pasta. Pasta noodles are made with eggs and flour which come from the eastern hemisphere. I also like tomato sauce or alfredo sauce with my pasta. Tomatoes and garlic for tomato sauce come from the Western hemisphere and milk, butter, and cheese for alfredo come from the eastern hemisphere.

What is the Age of Absolutism? What caused it? What effect did it have?

The age of absolutism was a time where one power had power over everyone else and was unlimited by any other institution like the church or parliament. The rise of absolutism was due to the Protestant reformation, which led to many deaths, taxation, and the rise of the middle class. This led to the idea of giving up your rights for protection. a. Identify and explain ONE cause of WWI in Europe.

b. Identify and explain ONE factor that made WWI a global conflict.

c. Identify and explain ONE effect of WWI OUTSIDE of Europe.

  1. One cause of WWI in Europe was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist group called the Black Hand. This group sent out groups to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand which caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia.

  • One factor that made WWI a global conflict was Britain and Germany’s entry into the war. Their entry into the war was a clash of imperialist powers. Both Germany and Britain wanted to imperialize and create more colonies which made the conflict global.

  • One effect of WWI outside of Europe was the influx of independence movements in European colonies. After the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, European states, specifically Germany’s power decreased. Colonies saw this as weak so they launched many independence movements to gain control of their land and to gain autocracy
