The “zero” hour
Naperville High School
Naperville, Illinois
SPARK by John Ratey
60 minute period with at least 30 minutes of MVPA before the class period where student most struggles
Results of the Zero HourExercise is the single most powerful tool you have to optimize brain function.
Participation in Zero Hour physical activity before school started led to significant academic achievement. On the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Naperville students finished first in the world in science and sixth in math, behind Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.
In Titusville, Pennsylvania, similar results occurred. Since implementing the program, scores in Titusville went from below the state average to 17 percent above the state average in reading, and to 18 percent above in math.

Suggestions
*Embrace the notion that PE Time is valuable academic time; without it, all other academic time suffers
*Get kids up and moving in the subject area classroom- gallery walks, behind-the-desk activities, pedal desks, flexible seating…kinesthetic classrooms enhance academic performance. A chair is the WORST learning environment for a student.
*Use the school environment to promote physical activity with challenges on walls, floors, hallways and bulletin boards
*6 weeks before standardized testing; promote proper sleep and breakfast each day to prepare students more effectively
Suggestions
*Learn about the content in PE and it’s ability to support other subject areas (tracking a ball is related to better reading; crossing the midline engages critical executive brain function).
*Check out healthmovesminds.org – a free curriculum that infuses SEL in HPE based on the new standards: mindful minute, kindness, emotion recognition, empowerment and more.
*Invest in quality physical education with professional development for PE teachers, technology as a tool for the gymnasium (heart rate monitors, pedometers, lcd projector/screen, Ipads to record motor skill performance, plickers, gifs)
*Encourage Staff Wellness; both mental AND physical with events such as a yoga class, fitness activity or an “off-line” social retreats
Thank you for all you DO!!!!
