How Much Can I Get? Well….It Depends

FAFSA is based on YOUR INCOME as an INDEPENDENT STUDENT:

  • Pell Grant = Not yet disclosed, possibly up to $7,000 per school year
  • Work Student = Only Pell Grant eligible students may get Work Study. Maxed at about 15 hours per week
  • In-House Scholarships = Depends on your financial need calculated by the FAFSA
  • Loans = Not recommended or a maximum of $9,500 for first year

  • Pell Grant = Not yet disclosed, possibly up to $7,000 per school year
  • Students may get Work Study, maxed at about 15 hours per week
  • In-House Scholarships = Depends on your financial need calculated by the FAFSA
  • Loans = Not recommended or maximum of $5,500 for first year

You ARE an INDEPENDENT STUDENT if any of the following is TRUE for you:

  • You are married

  • You are active duty in the military

  • You have a child (children)

  • Since 13, you have been in foster care, a dependent or ward of the court or both your parents are deceased

  • You are a LEGALLY emancipated minor

  • You are in a LEGAL guardianship

  • You have been an unaccompanied youth who has been homeless, or self supporting at risk of being homeless (see counselor corner for opportunities )

Loans are money given to you with the understanding that YOU pay it back.

Has a MAXIMUM amount a student can take. First Year MAX $5500

Interest is money added to what you ORIGINALLY borrowed at a percent. YOU ARE responsible to pay that money back!

Unsubsidized = Interest starts at day one Subsidized = Interest starts 6 months AFTER you graduate or stop attending school

  • Must have a Social Security Number or a Green Card
  • If you do not it is okay, there is another process you use
  • Must have a personal email address and phone number Create an FSA ID
  • Send FAFSA up to 20 colleges Invite your parents (contributors) to complete their FSA ID
  • Do not need a Social Security Number - BUT if they have one they need to use it
  • Must have a personal email address and phone number Create an FSA ID
  • Complete their part of YOUR application including their INCOME and ASSETS
  • MUST CONSENT to linking information to the IRS
