My name is Mrs. Kara Showerman and I will be your counselor this year. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goal of graduation.

This is my fifth year at MGLVA. and my 20th year in education. I live in the Frankenmuth area with my husband and we have two children and two grandchildren-super fun!

Spring 2021 Testing Information:

  • MGLVA is currently awaiting further instruction from the state.
  • If you wish to test but are not testing with MGLVA, you can still sign up on your own through collegeboard.
  • Seniors who want to test with school testing (if it takes place) must contact Mrs. Penn at testing@mglva.org
  • Students who test with MGLVA must complete ALL parts of the MME: SAT, WKK, MSTEP
  • Deadline to sign up for testing is FEB 24, 2021

Specific questions can be directed to Mrs. Anne Penn, aharkemapenn@mglva.org

STANDARDIZED TESTING

Admission to college is based primarily on classroom performance in high school. The grades you earn in academic courses provide a lot of information for colleges to make decisions. The second piece of critical information is a college entrance exam. All juniors (and seniors who have not yet tested) in Michigan will take the SAT in the spring, which will allow for possible retakes in the summer or fall. Most admissions decisions will be delayed until the college receives these test results. Please make sure you check with each college/university for up to date testing requirements (due to Covid)

Note: We strongly recommend that you send test scores to colleges of interest WHEN TESTING to avoid further delays and fees. You will receive 4 FREE score sends on SAT school day testing.

Testing FAQ

Q: What is MGLVA’s CEEB/School Code?

A: 232405

Q: How do I know what my score is?

A: You’ll need to log in to your online score report to see your score and get information on what your scores mean.

Q: How do I send my test scores to colleges and universities?

A: Two ways:

1.) When you test on SAT school day, you will have the opportunity to send your scores to up to four schools FREE. Even if you are unsure of your plans after high school, you should still list four schools of interest since it is FREE. (Students can still send four free score reports to colleges up to nine days after the test).

2.) If you need test scores sent to colleges/universities that have not received them, you will need to log in to your Collegeboard account.

Q: If I need to send a score report to a college or university (after the four free score sends), how much does it cost?

A: Additional score reports or those sent outside of the free period are $12

Q: Wow! That’s expensive! Is there any way I can send my scores for free?

A: Some students may qualify for a fee waiver. To see if you qualify, click HERE or contact your counselor.

Q: Where do I find how to create Collegeboard and Khan Academy accounts?

A: Follow this LINK for instructions

Transcripts

MGLVA uses Parchment to send electronic transcripts. As long as you are still a student, there is no charge to send a transcript.

What is an “unofficial” transcript?

Unofficial transcripts do not require a signature. They can be requested by students to check on progress or view GPA.

What is an “official”’ transcript?

Official transcripts are signed and/or sent directly from the school to another institution. Students will need to request an official transcript when applying for college or most scholarships.

Note: Please do not duplicate requests! Orders are generally processed a couple times a week. If there is an urgent request, please email your counselor to check the status.

To request a copy of your transcript, please use the link below to create an account and then request your unofficial or official copies. Choose either yourself as the recipient (unofficial) or the college/university you are applying to (official).

The first step! No matter which path you think you'd like to take, you must finish high school to be able to take full advantage of the

opportunities the industry has to offer. This is true if you want to be an apprentice, and it's true if you plan to be a construction engineer. A high school diploma is the key to your future in construction. After that, it's up to you.

  • Step One? Create your FSAID. You and your parent/guardian will need your own separate ID. For more information or to create your ID, click HERE

  • When you set up your FSAID, don’t use your school email! Use something that will remain active after you’ve graduated. Write everything down! You’ll need to remember passwords for a long time. Use something you won’t forget and keep it somewhere safe.

  • Even if you are unsure of your plans for next fall, file your FAFSA! It’s better to have it on file than to apply late-you are not committing to anything yet. AGAIN, IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT FALL, COMPLETE YOUR FAFSA ANYWAY.

  • Also check with the financial aid office of the college or university you are interested in attending. Most of them will offer free assistance with the FAFSA.

  • MGLVA offers some helpful resources (additional links, videos, etc.) Visit our WEEBLY site for more information

Are you aware that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) becomes available October 1st for the 2021-2022 school year?

If you are scheduled to graduate by June 2021, this applies to you! Here are some tips you should remember:

  • EVERYONE should apply for federal financial aid, regardless of family income levels. Many applications and scholarships are tied to having a completed FAFSA on file!

  • FAFSA is mobile friendly: simply download the myStudentAid app on your apple or android device. Recent updates have made it so you can go between a mobile device and computer and continue working where you left off.

Some scholarship applications will require a personal essay: To get help with writing a personal essay, visit http://www.studentscholarshipsearch.com/tips/scholarship-essay-tips.php

Types of Scholarships:

  • Need-based: Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need (make sure you’ve filed your FAFSA)
  • Merit-based: Awarded to students based on academic performance (grades, test scores, etc.)
  • Academic: Awarded to students based on intended area of study (ex: health field)
  • Athletic: Competitive: Awarded to student athletes

Remember: Unlike a student loan, scholarships are dollars you do not pay back-apply for as many as you can!

Scholarship Searches: Helpful Tips and Websites

Remember the GOLDEN rule of scholarship searches: NEVER PAY SOMEONE TO DO A SEARCH FOR YOU! If you are asked to pay, it’s likely a scam.

Visit MGLVA’s high school site throughout the year for all kinds of student information and updates: http://mglvahs.weebly.com/counselor-corner.html

Know what your costs will look like for school: To calculate the cost of colleges that are on your list, go here: https://collegecost.ed.gov/net-price or visit the website of individual schools
