Our Stories = Our Identity?

Could it be that our stories are “ingredients” of our identities?

Let’s take a look.

Use this to help you create a list of 25-30 “Territories” of your own. Remember, these are just titles or brief descriptions (5-7 words) of LITTLE moments or stories that are part of your history.

This is just brainstorming--don’t worry that you’ll ever have to share these, or use them for anything unless you choose to. Also, consider “coding” your more sensitive territories.

Territory Silhouettes

Today and Tomorrow

  • Select 20 of your favorite “Writing Territories”, and copy them neatly onto slips of paper. Consider using a form, such as “6 words each” to help you.

  • Then, make and cut out your silhouette, grab a piece of backing paper, and make your piece look like this

  • Please write your NAME neatly on the front of the assignment, and turn in on the left corner of Mr. Porter’s desk.

  • DUE WEDNESDAY: END OF HOUR

The ring in the tire…proposal!

Viola, growing up on the mountain

Motorcycles in mud, cool fall mornings

Olie’s dolphin leaps through cool canals

Light and shade, the Becker barn

Band practice and the Potlatch dance

St. Joe river, Hobo Cedar Grove

Each year, the fair--dusky neon

Today’s Writer’s Notebook

“Places”

  • Please take 7 minutes create an IMAGE LIST of 3-5 places that are or have been important to you. To do this, write down the name of the place first, and then as may IMAGES or details as you possibly can, which are connected to it.

Mr. Porter’s Example:

~Donna’s Rec. Room: orange, shag carpeting; pool table always covered with a thin, cotton sheet; Godzilla toy dinosaur with a sliding paper fire-tongue; song-birds in cages at the corners, summer sunlight and floating feathers; “The Price is Right”.

~Moscow High School: glass double doors; blue-carpeted commons with scents of cafeteria cinnamon rolls and lunch in the making; dogleg left and into the 9th grade hallway, science teachers in tie-dyed lab coats; down the steps past the Pepsi machines--the woodshop with it’s jointers, planers, aromas of sawdust and burned wood.
