Substitution

Augmentation

Modification

Redefinition

Technology is used as a direct substitute for a traditional tool without significant change in the task.

Examples:

  • Typing an essay on a computer instead of writing it by hand
  • Using an e-book instead of a physical textbook.

Technology enhances the task compared to what was possible without it. This enhancement might involve added features or improvements in efficiency.

Examples:

  • Using a spell checker or grammar tool while writing a document to improve the quality of the writing.
  • Using AI to do lesson planning

Modification involves significant redesign of the task through the use of technology, allowing for tasks that were previously inconceivable without it.

Examples:

  • Collaborative editing of documents in real-time
  • Conducting online research making use of diverse multimedia resources to create interactive presentations.

At this highest level of technology integration, tasks are redefined by technology in ways that were previously inconceivable. This might involve creating entirely new tasks that were not possible before the introduction of technology.

Examples:

Global collaboration projects,

Virtual field trips,

Simulations that provide immersive learning experiences.

When you create learning experiences for your learners, make sure that you incorporate the 4Cs into your lesson planning. Link them to your SAMR model. Decide how you can best use technology to substitute old ways of doing things. Push your learners to use technology to communicate their understanding, collaborate with others to share and test their understanding in a critical way, and create a visual or audio resource to demonstrate their creativity in solving problems.

This activity will take place BEFORE the workshop session. It is of the utmost importance that you understand what a flipped classroom is before you come to this session. All the resources for this activity can be found in your Flipped Resources folder.

What you have to know:

Answer the following questions:

  • What is a flipped classroom?
  • How is it different from what I am doing now?
  • How can technology help me to flip my classroom?

You will be required to answer the questions above when you come to class.

Using Plickers (www.plickers.com)

  1. Your facilitator will allocate a Plicker answer code to you.
  2. You will be taken through a quick on-board quiz. Turn the correct answer to face up and hold it up for your facilitator to scan with the Plicker app.

Plickers lets you poll your class without the need for student devices. Just give each student a card (a “paper clicker”), and use your Android smartphone or tablet to scan them to do instant checks-for-understanding, exit tickets, and impromptu polls.

Instructions:

In this activity we will practically answer the question of what a flipped classroom is by doing a “mock” flip pretending that the out-of-class work takes place at home.

  1. Set your timer for 15 minutes and find a quiet place outside of the classroom where you can go through the pre-class (Activity 2) material.
  2. Return to your workshop group.

Module 7: Flipped Classroom

20

You do not have to create your own resources for your subject area as chances are that someone has already shared something that will work well for your subject topic. In this activity, we will investigate various resource sites as well as look at how you can create your own flipped classroom resources.

  1. Think about what subject topic you will be teaching in the next2 weeks and how you can flip your lesson!

Grade:

Subject:

Topic:

You will need to provide your learners with a resource that will explain the topic to them comprehensively. Your learners will need to go through this in their own time at home.

  1. Individually (or you can team up with someone teaching the same subject as you), search for your exact topic (be specific) using the following general resource sites:

  1. Find a suitable resource by asking yourself the following questions:
    • Will this learning object teach my learners everything they need to know about my topic or can it just be an additional resource that will be nice for them to learn from or use?
    • Will I need to do major adjustments to make it suitable for my topic? If it will, then focus on (4).
  2. Create your own resource. There are numerous amazing tools for you to create a learning resource:
    • Get someone to video your lesson to use the following year.
    • Create your own narrated video slideshow (PowerPoint voice overs), or an audio podcast)

Don’t forget to share your resources

Activity 5*: Flipped lesson planning

It is time for you to think about how you will implement the flipped classroom strategy in your classroom

20

  1. Discuss some ideas for your lesson plan with your group members and submit your lesson plan idea.
  2. Complete the lesson plan template* in your activity folder. (*Optional and should be done at home). You may need to following documents to create your lesson plan:

How will you use the flipped classroom ? What will you give them before the lesson and what will they do during the lesson?

  • Your subject CAPS document and planner;
  • Example lesson plan (Example Flipped lesson plan for teacher PD);
  • Lesson plan template
  • Refer back to suitable app and tools that you can use!

Examples

You can use the Flipped Classroom strategy without any embedded technology. For instance by providing them with articles and chores to do before the start of the lesson.

Life sciences: Pre class: Give learners newspaper and magazine articles to work through regarding ways in which humans have impacted negatively on living organisms. In class they will do a mind map and discussion on how this can be changed.

Foundation Phase: Ask the grandparents/parents/siblings to tell them a folklore story from their childhood and then in class they have to “show and tell” bringing in role play.

One device

If you only have one device, for example if only the teacher has a device, you can still use it to bring technology into your flipped classroom.

Do your flip over a period of time and allow the learners to access the pre class material from your device by setting up an out of class station.

Give the learners the pre class material in printed format (see examples). Use your device for in- class activities.

Use your device to record in class activities. Use your device to record lesson

Expert

5 or more devices

If you borrow 4 more devices from your colleagues or have the use of a Mobikit/laptop trolley of devices, you can organise for the learners to use these devices as part of groups for pre-class and out of class activities.

Set up a few tablet stations containing the out-of-class material in the library or in another safe place like your classroom.

Organise for the learners to take turns in taking the devices home or using it out-of class contexts, making sure that you take safety and security into consideration.
