What are norm rules?

  • Normalization rules transform bibliographic data
    • E.g., replace, delete, or add new fields and subfields
  • Can be applied when:
    • Records are saved in the Metadata Editor
    • Import Profiles import records from external sources
    • Publishing Profiles publish Alma records to Primo, Google Scholar, RapidILL, etc.

Steps to Apply Norm Rules

  1. Create or edit entries in the Display and Local Fields table to use the recommended normalization rules
    1. Different norm rules for display, facets, and the search index
    2. If enabling the field for facet/search is not allowed, add it to the Local Fields using Search and Facet Normalization Rules table
  2. If relevant, add the field to the Hypertext Linking Definitions table
  3. In a View, add the field to the Brief Record Display tab and/or the Full Record Services > Details

If this error message appears after enabling the field for search and/or facet and clicking Save, the field must be added to Configuration > Discovery > Other > Local Fields using Search and Facet Normalization Rules.

Notes

  • Some edits to OTB fields have two components:
    • Removing MARC fields from the OTB display field by replacing the default with a “dummy” norm rule
    • Adding those MARC fields to a new local field to display it and index it for search/facets
    • Example: OTB Genre replaced by Local Field 78
  • After creating or editing norm rules for search/facet, local records must be reindexed
    • Create a set and run the “Recalculate Local Resource Types” job
