As a culminating project and celebration, educators participating in the PBL Magnet After-School Professional Development created this e-flip book. We are looking at math in our world and also applying the 8 Mathematical Practices, along with grade level standards.

What was used?

As a sample and guide for teachers and students to create their own Picture This slide deck, e-flip book, or blog.

All of the examples in this section were created by teachers from the K - 2 cohort. The critical mathematical areas for their grade levels are:

  • In Kindergarten, you become number detectives — counting, comparing, and finding shapes all around you!
  • In first grade, you become math builders — adding, subtracting, making groups of tens and ones, and measuring how long things are.
  • In second grade, you level up — getting even faster with adding and subtracting, measuring with real tools, and sorting shapes into fun groups!

FUN FACT:

Apples come in many sizes, shapes and colors. They have many basic parts that are the same. All apples have a core where you will find the apple seeds.

Types of patterns in nature include symmetry, fractals, spirals, the Fibonacci sequence and tessellations.

  • In sixth grade, you become problem solvers — working with ratios, rates, fractions, and even starting to use negative numbers, all while exploring shapes, space, and chances (probabilities)!
  • In seventh grade, you level up by mastering how to work with fractions and equations and learning how to study big groups by looking at small samples.
  • In eighth grade, you become math detectives — solving tricky equations, exploring cool things like functions, and figuring out the secrets of shapes and space using the Pythagorean Theorem!

  • First bottle: 1,500 mcg Vitamin A per serving (3 tablets), which is 167% of daily value.
  • Second bottle: 400 mcg Vitamin A per serving (½ tablet), which is 67% of daily value.

  • 800 mcg is greater than 500 mcg, so the second bottle provides more mcg per tablet. 800 - 500 = 350 mcg
  • Using the percent formula increase: Percent increase = Difference/ Original Amount x 100 %

A ramen noodle pillow, made by students is 15 inches long. To create a display for a school fair, the student wants to arrange several identical pillows end-to-end along a table that's 7 feet long. If there must be at least 1 inch of space between each pillow, how many ramen noodle pillows can fit on the table without exceeding its length, and what is the total length of space taken up by the pillows?

FUN FACT:

In Japan, it was cheaper to buy fresh noodles known as Udon, than to purchase instant noodles. The Udon noodles did not last as long, which is why instant noodles were considered “better.” The shelf life was much longer, making them more valuable. Eventually the cost of instant noodles went down making them very popular among lower income families.

It was an eye opening experience to know the real reason behind the pattern blocks.
