What is the connection?

  • What is the change from one figure to another?
  • How does that relate to the graph of the line?
  • What is the first difference?

Slope

  • The rate of change in the line is often �called the slope
  • It measures the steepness of the line
  • It is the ratio of the difference in y-values �(height) to the difference in x-values �(width) of any two points on the line

  • What does it mean for the slope to be positive? negative? zero? undefined?

Equation of Line

  • To connect the x-values (horizontal values) to the y-values (vertical values) we see that

y = stuff that changes + stuff that doesn’t change

y = rate of change x number of changes + stuff that doesn’t change
