Each student will choose an organic and an inorganic object to be layered, somehow connected, or intelligently juxtaposed then well drawn with interesting line variation and partially rendered in pencil.

This will be a formal exploration so make sure you consider formal relationships both before the objects are chosen and after. This means you means that if you choose seashell and an eyelash curler we will examine the formal connections made or revealed in the making Try not to get caught up in the innate connections that already exist. Don’t make object choices that already relate but look for new ways to consider what is happening visually between these two objects.

In these drawings the student should be aware of not only the positive space but the space in between and surrounding the objects. Negative space should be highly considered. The tension and use of negative space created not only between the two objects will be important but also that used in rectangle you are working in. Make sure you are carefully placing the objects with an awareness of the corners and edges and how they relate to the interior image.

35% of your drawing should reach full refinement, including shading/ rendering. This includes thrown shadows.

20% should be the beginning basic search including your searching lines, implied or guiding lines, and gestures. Show your thought process as you begin a drawing.

The rest of the drawing should be a finished contour drawing that is in full proportion and measurement with line weight and quality highly considered.

These drawings should have a “see-through” aspect to them. I would like you to imagine that you can see through the objects and draw the objects as if it is made of a see through material. This will help you develop structure and proportion. Think industrial or technical drawing.

These percentages may be throughout the drawing, you need to decide what needs to be done to draw in and lead the viewer through the entire picture to create an interesting well balanced composition.

This should be a measured well composed drawings using all the tools discussed in class.
