Proposals to revise

Order of the Warrior

Submitted May 2021 by the Awards Evaluation Committee to the Circle of Monarchs

2 of 47

Introduction:

The Awards Evaluation Committee is a group of volunteers serving the Circle of Monarchs.

  • In November 2019, the CoM directed that the committee evaluate the Orders of the Warrior ladder.
  • Since then, the committee has completed a survey of Amtgarders and reviewed the results. An initial presentation was made in July 2020.
  • The committee has now drafted proposals for the consideration of the Circle of Monarchs.
  • These proposals are drafted to reflect the overall consensus of Amtgard players and the best judgement of the committee.

Review of current standards from the Rules of Play

7. Warrior: Awarded for fighting prowess. Orders of the Warrior follow a regimented pattern for distribution:

i. A 1st Order is granted for winning three consecutive matches in any tournament or for battlefield prowess.

ii. A 2nd Order is granted for winning five consecutive matches in any tournament or for battlefield prowess.

iii. A 3rd Order is granted for winning seven consecutive matches in any tournament or for battlefield prowess.

iv. A 4th level is granted for winning nine consecutive matches in any tournament or for battlefield prowess.

v. A 5th level is granted for winning eleven consecutive matches in any tournament, or for taking at least 3rd overall in a kingdom-level tournament.

vi. A 6th level is granted for winning thirteen consecutive matches in any tournament, or for placing at least 2nd overall in a kingdom-level tournament.

vii. A 7th level is granted for winning fifteen consecutive matches in any tournament or placing 1st over all in a major kingdom-level tournament.

viii. An 8th level is granted for winning seventeen consecutive matches in any tournament or for winning a second major kingdom-level tournament.

ix. A 9th is granted for winning nineteen consecutive matches in any tournament or for winning a third major kingdom-level tournament.

x. A 10th is granted for winning twenty-one consecutive matches in a kingdom-level tournament or a fourth, first place win in a major kingdom-level tournament.

Note: Major kingdom-level tournament is defined as Weaponmaster, Warmaster (Crown Quals tournament), Olympiad, and/or an inter-kingdom event tournament. The level of competition and number of entrants in all tournaments must be considered before handing out Orders of the Warrior above seven. The difficulty of the tournament must warrant the level of order awarded.

Proposal 1: Clarify that kingdom monarchs can define a major kingdom level tournament.

Introduction:

  • In the current rules, levels 7-Masterhood are awarded for winning a major kingdom-level tournament, defined as “Weaponmaster, Warmaster (Crown Quals tournament), Olympiad, and/or an inter-kingdom event tournament.”

  • We will show that respondents support giving awards at level 7+ for more tournaments than those listed in the definition.

10 of 47

Proposal 1: Clarify that kingdom monarchs can define a major kingdom level tournament.

Analysis:

  • As we have seen, respondents support giving awards at level 7+ for tournaments that are not specified in the definition.

  • This makes sense, because kingdoms hold different kinds of tournaments. Some kingdoms choose their officers through bids instead of crown quals. Some kingdoms have Grand Duchies or Principalities. Some kingdoms hold special events such as Crystal Groves’ Lotus Games.

  • Therefore, in addition to the listed competitions, we recommend clarifying the monarch’s discretion to decide what counts as a major kingdom-level tournament.

Proposal 1: Clarify that kingdom monarchs can define a major kingdom level tournament.

Existing RoP, additions, deletions.

Note: A major kingdom-level tournament is defined as Weaponmaster, Warmaster (Crown Quals tournament), Olympiad, and/or an inter-kingdom event tournament, or other events as defined by the kingdom monarch. The level of competition and number of entrants in all tournaments must be considered before handing out Orders of the Warrior above seven. The difficulty of the tournament must warrant the level of order awarded.

12 of 47

Proposal 2: Clarify that any tournament format can produce qualifying streaks.

Introduction:

  • Streaks may be used to award levels of Orders of the Warrior.
  • Many different tournament formats are used across Amtgard, and there is discussion about how to count streaks earned in these formats.
  • We will show that respondents see bracketed, ironman or pool formats as generally equivalent.

Proposal 2: Clarify that any tournament format can produce qualifying streaks.

Total Responses:

Better to give too few: 31%

Better to give too many: 69%

15 of 47

Proposal 2: Clarify that any tournament format can produce qualifying streaks.

Analysis:

  • As we have seen, respondents see bracketed, ironman or pool formats as generally equivalent.

  • There is some difference in support at the top of the ladder. Since overall, respondents indicated it is better to give too many awards than too few, we are not proposing any restrictions added to the top of the ladder. Monarchs can continue to make judgement calls about giving high level streak-based awards.

  • Therefore, we recommend clarifying in the rules that any tournament format can produce a qualifying streak.

Proposal 3a: Replace kingdom-level win requirement for 7th Order with kingdom placement or duchy level wins. Adjust other levels for consistency.

Introduction:

  • Currently a 7th Order is given for winning a major kingdom-level tournament.
  • We will show that
    • Respondents believe a kingdom-level win should not be required for 7th order
    • Respondents believe duchy level wins should qualify for 7th order
    • 20 of our 22 kingdoms allow duchies to give 7th or higher ladder awards

Analysis:

  • We have shown:

    • Respondents believe duchy level wins should qualify for 7th order
    • 20 out of 22 kingdoms allow duchies to give 7th or higher ladder awards.
  • Therefore, we recommend removing the kingdom-level win requirement and replacing it with kingdom placement or duchy level wins.
  • To maintain a coherent ladder, other levels will change when this happens.

Proposal 3b (dependent on a): Replace kingdom-level win requirement for 8th Order with kingdom placement or duchy level wins. Adjust other levels for consistency.

Introduction:

  • Currently an 8th Order is given for winning a major kingdom-level tournament.

    • Respondents are narrowly divided on whether a kingdom win should be required for 8th Order
    • 41% of respondents believe 8th order could be given for duchy tournaments.
    • 12 out of 22 kingdoms allow duchies to give up to 8th order.

Proposal 3b (dependent on a): Replace kingdom-level win requirement for 8th Order...

Analysis:

  • We have shown:
    • Respondents are narrowly divided on whether a kingdom win should be required for 8th Order.
    • 41% respondents believe 8th order could be given for duchy tournaments. We have compensated for this minority support by suggesting that an 8th order require a second duchy win to build on the 7th order requirements.
    • 12 of our 22 kingdoms allow duchies to give up to 8th order.
  • We acknowledge the narrow divides and minority support for some components, but wished to give monarchs the deciding voice on whether to implement this proposal.

Proposal 4: Allow 5th Warrior to be given for battlefield prowess.

Introduction:
