Be sure to teach students the why of deep breathing. When you take a deep breath, it stimulates the Vagus Nerve. This is called the LOVE nerve, because it mimics the kind of relaxed, calm, companionable feeling you get when you are with someone you love. The Vagus nerve is the longest and biggest nerve in the body. It is situated right at the side of the brain, at the base of the skull and travels all the way down the body to the base of the diaphragm, right on top of the stomach. As you breathe deeply, the diaphragm contracts, stimulating the vagus nerve. This stimulation triggers neurotransmitters back up to the brain, through the parasympathetic nervous system, which tells your brain to release oxytocin, the heart rate slows, and every cell in your body – RELAXES. Several deep belly breaths will achieve this result.
