Attendance

We are aiming for 100% attendance. Undoubtedly, there will be times when a child’s attendance isn’t possible (sickness, bereavement etc.) but our aim is to have all children here on all allocated school days. If a child’s attendance is too low, we are required to pass on this information to education and welfare officers.

The School day begins at 08:45. Children are expected in at this time and will leave school promptly at 15:00. It is important your child is here on time and we assume your support on this matter.

If your child is ill and unable to attend, it is important that you contact the school or send a note of explanation the following day.

Homework

  • Homework for Primary 6 has already started.
  • In Primary 6 you will have daily spellings/phonics, reading, and a written homework.
  • Numeracy written homework should be completed on a Monday and Wednesday.
  • Literacy written homework should be completed on a Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Please complete the homework with your child, assess it and sign off on it where possible. Next, ask them to read with you, this has been proven to be extremely beneficial (especially those who struggle in this area).
  • There will be a spelling test and mental maths test every Friday.

  • If you receive a Free Homework Pass that means you do not have a written homework for that night but you still have spellings and reading.

Homework - Reading

  • The children will have reading homework. Each night they are expected to read for at least 20 minutes. Listening to, reading to and giving feedback to your child will benefit them enormously in terms of their education and future employment prospects.

Mental maths is also developed during ‘maths meetings’ at least 3/5 days in a week. Here we cover the broad maths curriculum with the aim of consolidating knowledge and keeping facts and strategies fresh.

THE WORLD AROUND US.

  • HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, SCIENCE

  • These subjects are taught using a topic based approach. For example, we take a broad topic such as ‘The Vikings’ and use it to explore European history at that time. For geography this may be a ‘maps’ topic and for science a ‘water’ topic. Topic investigation is a good way to develop skills in these subjects at primary school level.

  • Your child will also cover topics in Drama, Music and Art.
  • There are PDMU programs outlined for each year group to cover. These sessions take the form of informal discussions and activities around given themes such as Identity and community. The emphasis is on personal well being.
  • Religious Education is delivered in much the same way and is integral to our school and mission statement.
  • ICT will also be used to enhance all areas of your childs curriculum learning through the use of the ICT room, Interactive Whiteboard and iPads.
