iThenticate is…

A tool designed to identify plagiarism or errors in originality in works intended for publication, submission for externally funded research or graduate thesis/dissertation submissions.

The tool screens your writing against an extensive dataset of published works and provides you with a similarity report.

A paid subscription funded through the Office of Research.

A professional tool – your works is compared to published works, websites and terminal publications.

This tool is not intended for use with student papers. Turn-it-in is available on the folio platform for non-published student work.

How to get an account�

Fill out the google form with your basic information (or ask your committee chair to sign up).

Accounts will be set up in the faculty members name.
Accounts will typically expire at the end of the semester unless other arrangements are made.
When you close your account – your folder will be permanently deleted. There is no record of your search except the report you print.
iThenticate should not be used for student assignment papers. (Use Turn-it-in for this purpose through Folio)

What happens if my report identifies plagiarism?	This is a tool to help you check your originality. You fix it.
Do I have to use it?	No. This is a tool for your use.
What happens if I don’t check it or fix it?	iThenticate is also available for audit, publishers, digital commons, COGS and administration. (They will have to run their own report of the document you turn in.)
What happens if my department chair asks to see my report?	The library liaison can not share your report with anyone but you without your permission.

Could you have inadvertently appropriated someone else's ideas as your own?

Look for larger matches first – but be aware of the volume of smaller matches to the same text

How to I read it?

What if I wrote it in the first place?

Self plagiarism happens when you “re-use” text.

Reusing your own previous work in another context without citing the prior use.
Re-publishing data or text published violates the copyright of the publisher.
Re-use of prior writing without identifying prior use clouds the integrity of writing.

Data disaggregation or fragmenting – This is when you segment a data set to create more than one publication out of the data.

How hard is it to use?

Upload your file into your folder

Up to 200MB or 1000 files in a zip folder – may not exceed 400 pages per upload.
If smaller file – cut and paste into the submission box

Your report will be returned to your folder for you to view or print

*be aware – as soon as you upload a file the report automatically begins to run.
You can run a file with the same name up to 5 times on the same page count.

What happens to my uploads/reports after I am done?

You can store your document in your folder as long as you have access
You can permanently delete your documents and reports
When you close your account – your folder will be permanently deleted. There is no record of your search except the report you print.
