How has the decline of arts education in public schools for grades kindergarten through twelve (K-12) in the years between 2004 to 2024 in the United States impacted the field of engineering?

The decline of arts education in the American academic system for grades K-12 in the years 2004 to 2024, has created an absence of original ideas and imaginative thinking [creativity] among students, a vital tool in engineering, thereby weakening the field and the workers within it.

Art education’s prevalence and access within American public schools has declined over the last 20 years, largely due to budget cuts and policies like the No Child Left Behind Act.

Arts education improves academic & classroom performance, especially for STEM courses.

Arts education fosters creativity within students, and with it, skills like collaboration, ingenuity, and problem- solving.

Engineers need creative minds to satisfy the goal of engineering as a profession: to design new products and improve existing ones. The field requires creativity to function and build.

Engineering can not exist without art in many aspects of it, and without creativity, which arts education fosters, the engineering field risks becoming limited and falling behind in an ever-changing world.
