Why are locusts bad?

What’s up with locusts?

• Locusts travel quickly in big swarms, and they feed on crops.
• With so many locusts travelling in bigger numbers, they are completely destroying farmers’ fields.
• This leaves very little food for the farmers.

Warming oceans and frequent cyclones caused by climate change have increased the rate of rapid locust migration.

The Emergency Locust Response Program is funded by the World Bank. They monitor the migration of locusts and give resources to people who have been affected by the swarms.

Australia’s bushfires

• Main reason due to Climate Change
• Leads to drought, causing things like grass and trees to be more vulnerable to fire
• Increased temperature, leading to longer and more intense heat waves
• stronger winds, allowing the fire to spread quickly

Why is it happening?

How does this affect Australia?

• In the year of 2019-20, about 5000 were killed or displaced due to the fires.
• In the same year, the air pollution had a record high of 11x higher than the average level

• More than one-fifth of Australia’s forests were burned in one season

Asia’s Goals

• Renewable energy
• These include solar and wind energy
• This helps by reducing the usage of fossil fuels

• Public Awareness
• Government and civil organizations, do things like campaigns, ads or protests
• For example Ricoh, a company that prioritizes our environment,

• Carbon Prices
• Some countries implemented carbon taxes
• Makes capacities on emissions, encouraging businesses to cut emissions where it's cheapest to do so.

Waters off the west shore of the Antarctic Peninsula are warming faster than almost any other place on earth!

Regulating Temperatures & Rising Sea Levels

• Antarctica and its ice, ocean and ecosystems play a critical role in regulating and cooling the global climate.

• A few centimetres of sea level rise may not seem significant, but it can increase the risk of flooding, storms, and saltwater intrusion, causing damaged homes, infrastructure and farmland.

Effects on Animal Habitat and Food Resource

Extinction of native arctic species due to loss of habitat and reduced prey

Ex: Between 1980 and 2020, several penguin colonies on the Antarctic Peninsula vanished: Adélie and chinstrap penguin colonies

promotes cooperation among the Arctic States, Arctic indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues.

SCAR: ANTARCTIC COMMITTEE

“Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research”

Provides scientific advice to the Antarctic Consultative on issues affecting the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system.

CHANGING LIFE & EDUCATION

Antarctic researchers are working to piece together a web of interconnected elements to explain how the climate crisis is affecting life on the Antarctic Peninsula, and predict how this may change into the future.

ARCTIC REMOTE ENERGY NETWORKS (ARENA)

Around 80 percent of remote Arctic communities depend on diesel as their primary energy source today. The aim is to become carbon neutral by 2050 and welcomes the strengthened commitments for 2030.

“Even though we’re thinking long-term, we need to act short-term. On a local scale, a hydro plant is very expensive to set up, but for a neutral future, the plant is necessary. We need to act in the short-term with eyes on the long-term gain.”

- Lost ½ trillion euros (~ 1 trillion dollars) from weather and climate-related extremes

- Created Europe Climate Law in July 2021:

> Must cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030

> Goal is to make Europe climate neutral by 2050

• In December 2015, the world took a significant first step by adopting the Paris Agreement, in which all countries committed to take action to address climate change.

• This goal aims to:

• Improve countries’ capacity to respond to climate hazards
• Financial support for developing countries to implement sustainable development
• Climate change related planning with a focus on women, youth and local and marginalized communities
• Integrate climate goals in policy planning around the world
• Increase awareness and education
