Goal of AOL program

AOL Program

    • Scouts participated in a series of requirements preparing them for the first rank in Scouts BSA

    • Den Chiefs from the Troop participated in den meetings and developed relationships with the scouts

    • Patrol method was practiced to begin to familiarize scouts with the practice, expectations, & terminology

Responsibilities & Expectations

    • Scouts must document progress and obtain sign-offs
    • Book is organized to have scouts progress in skill development
    • Service hours, camping nights, hiking miles are tracked online and in manual

Your scout will have the chance to work toward the BSA’s most prestigious award, the rank of Eagle Scout.

This doesn’t have to be your scout’s focus though…it is the journey of scouting

What are Merit Badges?

    • Opportunities to explore areas of interest and learn about the subject matter

How are they earned?

    • In person, on-line, university settings, troop meetings, and others…

What is the process?

    • Find ones of interest, look for ways to participate, and gain Scoutmaster approval, then have a great time

Often scouts are disappointed that they are not allowed to carry their knives, use an axe, or start a fire when they first cross over to the troop. This activity “fixes” that problem.

Outdoor Activities

    • Troop selects locations and activities - annual planning every August
    • RSVPs posted via Sign up genius
    • Every Troop activity posted in the Troop calendar
      • Big events with a lot of details are also posted to the front page of the Troop website
    • Transition from “family” camping with parents and siblings to camping with other patrol scouts (or individually)
      • This is a big change from Cub Scouts - BSA policy has specific rules

Troop Website

    • Webmaster - adult supervised, scout led activity. Two webmasters (Troop 3 & Troop 1003).
    • Troop website is a “guidepost” to resources.
    • Main parts:
      • Front page includes troop news, big events, & fundraisers
      • Sub pages include payment portal for online payments, digital library and paper library (scout librarian), Outdoor Activities portal, Merit Badge counselors, and more.

Scout Accounts & Fundraising

Scout Accounts

    • Scouts have individual accounts where earned or gifted funds accumulate
    • Funds are to support camping fees, gear, and other scouting costs
    • NOTE: This is under review with National recommendations

Fundraising

    • Troop does not pay for events like a Pack
    • We will need to be active in fundraising to assist in deferring costs

Scout Uniform

    • New: epaulets, number, kerchief, slide/woggle, AOL rank, merit badge sash (all gifts at Cross-Over)
    • Same: Council patch, Patrol, Messenger of Peace, shoulder loops, Religious Knot
    • Remove: Pack numbers, service awards, right pocket flap awards, World Conservation Award, Webelos rank
    • Updates should be on uniform for 1st Court of Honor
