Who we are (KISJ)
We are the only official DECA Chapters on Jeju Island.
What is DECA?�With a nearly 75-year history, DECA has impacted the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since it was founded in 1946.
DECA’s brand identifies a remarkable experience in the preparation of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs.
Groups
Teams: �Minimum of two students ~ Maximum of four students
Schools: �Any students from one of the four GEC schools (the group members do not need to be attending the same school).
We highly encourage students from various schools to collaborate.
Grade Level: �Any students between the ages of 13 to 19 (on the date of the conference, April 11th, 2020) are eligible to be part of this competition.
Costs
The event will cost 22,000 KRW per student.
The costs will be used to cover:

Entrepreneurship X Stock Market Challenge
Student teams will have two tasks. �Participation in both tasks is not mandatory to qualify for the conference on April 11th. Your group does have the option to choose to enroll in both or only one of the following competitions.

February 7th�Payments Due (22,000 KRW per participant) �Late Payments Due February 17th (+5,000 KRW late fee)��Begin investing in the virtual stock market from February 10th.�The code for the competition will be shared by February 8th.

Background
The Global Education City has witnessed tremendous growth in population the past decade.
Since its inception in 2011, the community continues to grow in population along with the number of businesses catering to this ever-growing community.
Task
You are in charge of creating a proposal in front of a council of six investors.
The investors are part of a collective group known as the KISJ DECA Trust Fund, who provide grants for start-ups, in exchange for a share in stocks and profits.

Equipment Cost
What type of equipment do you need to run your business? �Does the aforementioned equipment have fixed maintenance costs? If so, how much? If it was to break down, how much would the replacement cost be?�(Ex: fryers, ovens, refrigerators).
This category also includes decor such as but not exclusive to:
silverware, glassware, plants, tables, chairs, and lighting.
Personnel
How many employees in total will you need to employ?�What type of positions will exist? Will there be one head chef or will the role of chef be shared by several of the staff? If there is a head chef, how would you pay the head chef differently from the sous chef?
How many of the staff will be employed full time vs part time? Will the benefits be different, if so how? (For example, paid vacation days, overtime, bonuses)
Will the salary structure be based on hourly pay or a monthly salary? If it is a monthly salary, how many hours/days a week are employees expected to work?
Food / Menu
What type of food will your restaurant sell? �What are the main dishes?
Why did you choose the type of cuisine you decided to sell? �Is there competition in the area? If so, what differentiates your restaurant from the competitions? How will you compete with them--The quality of food? Customer service? Price? Location?
Are the dishes high in cost to provide? If so, how much are you selling the food items for? Are these prices something your target demographic can handle?

Marketing
Each team must come up with at least one marketing strategy to help advertise for their restaurant.
If your marketing involves advertisements or promotions, how much will they cost to run?

Ingredients
Where will you import your ingredients from?
�You do not need to provide the name of an exact vendor, but your price estimates must be based on some real life statistics.

Each team is provided with “seed money” from a generous investor in Seoul of,
₩60,000,000 KRW
The investor will also provide
₩30,000,000 KRW�for operational funds the first year.
The interest rate for this loan is at 0%. However, the investor expects profits within the first eight business quarters (first two years) of operation.

Teams are expected to provide a rough estimate in regards to the projected revenue for the first 3-years of operation.

Schedule for the Entrepreneurship Competition
Send your first draft for your restaurant idea to nharris@kis.ac by March 4th (WED).� You will receive feedback by March 20th (FRI) 11:59 PM.��You will then submit a final draft by March 25th (WED)
The Best 6 Proposals will be announced on April 4th (SAT). �The best proposals will be selected by a panel of teachers from St. Johnsbury, Korea International School Jeju, North London Collegiate School and Branksome Hall Asia.
The aforementioned chosen 6 proposals will present on April 11th @ KISJ.
Each team will be given 10-minutes to present, followed by 5-minutes of questions and answers.
Stock Market Challenge
Who is the Next Warren Buffett?
Platform
We will use the virtual stock market. (click to check the link)�
The platform is free and is used by 20,000+ teachers and 200,000+ students from the world each year to learn about personal finance and economics.
Task
The Stock Market Challenge will take place from February 4th to April 4th.
Students will be asked to examine the logic behind why they chose to invest in the companies they did through their presentations.
Throughout the weeks and months of the activity, teams are encouraged to make modifications through buying and selling stocks in order to increase their portfolio value.
Furthermore, students are expected to explain in their presentations the type of changes they decided to take throughout the three months in order to improve their portfolio.
Task 2 (Rules)
Each team will be given $1,000,000 to invest.
In order to streamline the competition, we have set several parameters students are expected to follow when engaged in the challenge.
Presentation
Teams will be judged based on three types of criteria.
How their stocks fared in regards to performance.
How each team modified their choice in stocks (or chose to stay on course) based upon the information they had gathered.
Teams will be evaluated upon standards based upon Common Core English Language Arts Standards.

Mr. Shawn Vento
[Head of School]
Mr. Vento has experience running the company Safety Training Plus as President, working for the International Schools Groups in Al Khobar Saudi Arabia as a Assistant Principal, and currently serves as the Head of School at Korea International School Jeju.
He holds a Bachelors degree in Physical Health Education from the University of Toronto, and a Masters degree in Science from State University of New York at Buffalo. He holds Principal Qualification from the province of Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Nickolas Harris
[Economics Teacher]
Mr. Harris has experience working for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as a consultant where he worked with pharmaceutical companies from Europe, Asia, and the USA in English and Japanese at Tokyo, Japan and Shanghai, China.
He currently teaches economics at Korea International School Jeju.
He holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Masters in Education in International Teaching from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

Mr. Chandler Bell
[Business & AP Economics Teacher]
Mr. Bell has 6 years teaching AP Economics and Economics in schools in the US, Thailand, and currently in South Korea at St Johnsbury Academy in Jeju.
He holds a Bachelors degree in Social Studies Education from the University of Georgia with a minor certification in Computer Science. While in school at UGA, he completed several economics courses focused on comparative economic systems, entrepreneurship, and economics of global food problems.

Mr. Raymond Maher
[Economics Teacher]
Mr. Maher has over thirty years experience teaching Economics in the UK and now in Korea. He has mentored business groups in the Young Enterprise initiative in the UK and is interested in school publications, currently in charge of the Islander CCA at NLCS Jeju.
Mr. Maher holds a degree in Economics and a teaching qualification from Trinity College Dublin.

Ms.Yoobin Park
[BHA Representative]
Yoobin Park is currently a senior at Branksome Hall Asia. She takes IB DP Economics Higher Level Course and has experience working as a Director of Finance Department of MIT LaunchX Project and LUTOC (Mock Trial contest).
As a member of the DECA Club at school, she created business plans and ran campaigns for marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

Two teams from each of the competitions (entrepreneurship and the stock market competitions) who were 7th and 8th choice (so one or two away from presentations) will also receive an official certificate indicating that they were the “GEC Business Competition Honorable Mention”.
