ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਤਾਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ-ਵੱਡੇ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਵੇਚਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਪਰ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਚਲਾਕ ਸੀ।

ਉਸਦੇ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਸਨ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਖਰਗੋਸ਼ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਹਨ।”

ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਸੁਝੀ।
ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਵਿਚਕਾਰੋਂ ਦੀ ਕੱਟਿਆ।

ਫਿਰ ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਨੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਉਸਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੂਈ-ਧਾਗਾ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਹਿਸਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਬਾਂਦਰ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕੀਤੀ, “ਇਹਨਾ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ।”

ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਨੇ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, ਠੀਕ ਹੈ! "ਜਿੰਨੇ ਤੁਸੀ ਪੈਸੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸੀ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਰਬੂਜ਼ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ"।

ਹਾਥੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ ਲੂੰਬੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਬਕ ਸਿਖਾਉਣਾ ਹੀ ਪਵੇਗਾ।”
ਸਾਰੇ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਈ।
