Welcome to the Student Research Symposium!

We're glad that you've decided to participate in the student research symposium.

We'd like to take a few minutes now to tell you what the Symposium is all about.

Each year there are two Symposia

One in Pittsburgh

And one at Allegheny College

Setting Up

After you've had a chance to set up your display, the Creek Connections staff will deliver a few inspirational words and officially kick off the Symposium!

What to Expect During the Day

After opening remarks, you will get a chance to present your project,and the opportunity to explore other schools' exhibits.

Creek Connections Project Assistants have prepared focus group activities involving various topics (like bugs, fish, French Creek, art projects, and games) for your participation in the afternoon.

Morning Activities: A Chance to Show Off Your Work

  • All student projects will be displayed in the new dining hall area.
  • Students will have an opportunity to show off their displays, posters, and other props, as well view the displays from the other schools.
  • Students may also attend presentations in the old dining hall area.

Display Posters

  • A display poster can be easy and fun! You'll enjoy making it and others will learn from it.
  • At the Symposium you can get ideas for next year's project!

Be Creative!

Last year some projects included a "spotted turtle rap" and a giant creek board game!

We can never get enough of those posters

  • While your class is looking at other posters, make sure you have someone stay near your own poster.
  • This person can discuss your group's work and answer questions that students and teachers from other schools may have.

BE SURE TO SWITCH OFTEN! this way everyone gets a chance to see the other displays.

In addition to poster and interactive displays you will also be scheduled for a presentation by an regional environmental organization!

Possible Student Presentation Topics Include:

  • Watershed comparison
  • Riparian restoration
  • Pollution in your stream
  • Macroinvertebrates and or fish in your stream
  • Bacteria in your stream

What else is there to do?

In addition to student posters and presentations, you can check out presentations from groups like the Pennsylvania Game Commission

Afternoon Activities

  • After Lunch get ready to participate in focus group activities lead by the Creek Connections Staff.
  • Focus group activities are fun, hands-on activities that you get to choose!
