2009 Q3 Open Prompt:

A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

We’re now going to read some model essays and as we read I really want you to remember an important lesson from the first writing workshop about the humility necessary to truly learn:

Model essay from Chilton

Written in 40 minutes

Typed up later with no revisions

It’s a 6. Learn from it.

25

26 of 34

To do:

Read over and discuss frequently Chilton’s model essay.

Write down notes on his techniques and skills he employs.

26

What can you learn from him to improve your writing?

27 of 34

Potential Criticisms:

  • Too much summary → I provide copious evidence to my thesis
  • Doesn't relate to prompt → always relates to my thesis and only JV writers explicitly feel the need to make an artificial connection to prompt
  • This is a model, but I'm worried you'll mimic me without understanding the subtleties: next set of essays with way too much summary and not about prompt...
