GOAL 7: Solve Problems

Choice B:

“Understanding Terms”

- Open the “Word Meanings” link and discuss the bullet points in the article, highlighting differences between older and newer terms.

- Open the “Latin Terms” link and briefly discuss some of the words in the list. These terms may appear in legal or church documents that you encounter.

- Open the “Name and Word Spellings” link. In the Why Do Spelling Inconsistencies Exist section, read and discuss the points in the first paragraph and a half, about challenges with spelling.

- In the Problems with Pronunciation section, review the example in bold for current and alternate spellings.

- In the Errors Caused by Handwriting section, review and discuss the second paragraph.

- In the Just Plain Typos section, note the kinds of errors that people might type into records and documents.

“GC: Potential Problems …”

- Scroll down to Problems with Marriage Records. Read and discuss the second and fourth paragraphs.

- Scroll down to Problems with Cemetery Records. Read and discuss the second paragraph

- In Differences in Names and Spellings, scroll down to “Voluntary and Involuntary Information” and find the paragraph that begins. “Since the enumerators were being paid …” Read and discuss from that point to the next bold heading, to highlight the issues with census enumerators gathering information from neighbors.

“LDS: Dealing with Errors”

- Read and discuss the real-life problem described in the second paragraph.

- Read and discuss the importance of the last sentence, that begins, “In other words …”

“FS: Contradictions and Discrepancies”

- Scroll down to the Dates heading. Review and discuss that section, as well as Places and Relationships.

“AAC: Look at Both Sides …”

- Start the video at 0:30 and watch to the end. Summarize the info on the screen occasionally if needed, for clarity. Discuss the importance of analyzing all parts of genealogical documents, including the backs. This illustrates that “missing” information may not be missing after all.

“FHD: Why You Should Stop …”

- Scroll down to Why Reexamining …” Read and discuss the first paragraph, emphasizing the importance of reviewing records and looking for details.
