May Freebie: Swat a Word

This game is designed for students to play with a partner and can be edited for any word list. Color and B&W versions are provided.

To prepare the game:

  • Enter the words you’d like to use into the provided text boxes on the Fly Word sheet. Add words that include the phonics pattern you’re studying in the spaces marked with red text.
  • Print the Fly Words and Swatters. (You could use cardstock for the swatter tops and popsicle sticks on the bottom of the swatters to make them more durable and easier to use. Students could also swat with their hands.)
  • Cut out the Fly Words (flies with the words) and the Swatters.

Game directions:

  • Partner students up and give them a set of Fly Words. Give each student their own swatter.
  • Have students spread out the Fly Words.
  • Have Partner 1 call out a Fly Word. When Partner 2 spots it, they swat it with their Swatter. If Partner 2 correctly swats the word that was called, he/she can keep the fly.
  • Then Partner 2 calls out a remaining Fly Word and Partner 1 can try to swat it. Have students continue to take turns.
  • Partners work together to swat and collect all the flies.
  • Once all the flies are collected, students could practice writing their Fly Words on the recording sheet. They could also do this step as they play the game.
