How My Living Thing Changed Over Time

Sahelanthropus tchadensis -- 7 - 6 million years ago

Appearance (What did the ancestor look like?)

The Sahelanthropus tchadensis had a small brain, sloping face, prominent brow ridges, and an elongated skull.

Environment (What environment did the ancestor live in?)

They likely lived in forests and grasslands.

Adaptations (What adaptations did this ancestor have?)

They walked on two legs which helped them to survive in diverse habitats.

Evidence for Evolution (What evidence do we have that this is an ancestor?)

This ancestor, like humans, walked on two legs, had small canine teeth, a short middle part of the face, and the spinal cord opening was underneath the skull instead of towards the back like in non-bipedal apes, indicating a link between the Sahelanthropus tchadensis and current day humans.

How My Living Thing Changed Over Time

Australopithecus Afarensis-- 3.85 - 2.95 million years ago

Appearance (What did the ancestor look like?)

Apelike face (a flat nose, and a projecting lower jaw), brains about 1/3 the size of modern human brains, long and strong arms, curved fingers (for climbing trees), small canine teeth, and walked on two legs.

Environment (What environment did the ancestor live in?)

Woodlands, grasslands, and other diverse environments are thought to be their homes.

Adaptations (What adaptations did this ancestor have?)

They were very good at climbing trees and they walked primarily on two legs which is credited to helping them survive.

Evidence for Evolution (What evidence do we have that this is an ancestor?)

The Australopithecus Afarensis had small canine teeth like all other early humans, and stood on two legs, regularly walking upright

How My Living Thing Changed Over Time

Homo erectus -- 1.89 million - 110,000 years ago

Appearance (What did the ancestor look like?)

They had body proportions that were a lot like modern day humans.

Environment (What environment did the ancestor live in?)

Northern, Eastern, and Southern Africa; Western Asia and East Asia (usually grassy/ flatlands)

Adaptations (What adaptations did this ancestor have?)

Homo Erectus had slightly longer legs and slightly shorter arms as an adaptation to living on the ground. They also learned to make some of the first tools.

Evidence for Evolution (What evidence do we have that this is an ancestor?)

Their body proportions are very similar to that of current day humans and they show complexity of thought through their work with tools .

My Living Thing -- Humans

Scientific Name

Homo sapiens

Appearance (What does it look like?)

Humans today have larger brains, less hair, and more proportionate bodies than our ancestors.

Environment (What environment does it live in?)

Humans live/ survive in very diverse environments due to our wide range of geographical locations.

Adaptations (What adaptations does it have?)

Endurance running, sweating, walking upright, and hearing tuned for speech are some examples of human adaptations.

Future Evolution?

(Predict how it will evolve millions of years from now?)

Scientists don't believe that humans are likely to evolve much any time soon but a theory is that humans may change due to more colonization in space due to more space travel.

Evolution Summary

Earth’s environment has changed a lot during the time that human ancestors and humans have been around. While most human ancestors used to live in a wetter climate with many trees, over time the climates that they lived in became drier and flatter land, effectively changing our anatomy into what it is today. Due to these changes, we no longer had the abilities/ need to have hands good for climbing trees and were able to develop legs that were better suited for consistently walking upright. Humans survived natural selection through the abilities to eat and digest many food types, the ability to walk upright, and the ability to create and use tools, shelter, etc. This is how humans evolved and were able to be the successful species that they are today.
