Responding to Reading Prep-1 level - By Jenny Ashby Bendigo, Australia
After we have read a book as a guided reading my students receive an email with a link to a site that contains information about something from the story or related in someway. Sometimes there is text to read as well.
The children save an image and use the image in Comic Touch (an iPod version of Comic Life)
I then request they add some text to tell something they have found out or a comment from the story.
This is a great introduction for using Comic Life on the computers and could be further developed in Comic Life.

Thinking about ........... Jenny Ashby, Bendigo Australia
Wouldn't we love to know what students are thinking when they are learning, or not learning :(
Use the thinking bubble on work samples for students to add what they had to think about to complete the task or problem.
Reflections about learning are very powerful and help the student to maintain the learning.
I used comic touch with gr 5/6 after they had written quite extensive recounts about their school camp. Then they chose photos and instead of telling about the activity they added what the students were thinking while doing the activity.
Strategies used in Maths, wonderings about things, predictions about science experiments, analysing their writing, explaining why, how do you think?.....
Take photos of your students working and then they can add their thinking.
Compare and contrast Jenny Ashby Bendigo, Australia
Use a page layout with just two images needing to be added. Students add 2 images and then add statements that compare the two or show a relationship between the two images.
Comic Life as a Storyboard
by Kent Manning - Ontario, Canada
We used Comic Life with 5th and 6th graders to deconstruct public service announcement videos.
Each frame has:
1. Frame number.
2. Type of movie shot.
3. What's happening in the shot.
Explaining a strategy in maths.
In our Grade Four class we played a calculator game of 'Fish' to develop understanding of place value. The assessment task: write a thinking/talking conversation on your photo to explain your strategy. This successful activity utilised thinking and talking language - the kids had to really talk like a mathematician.

A Celebration Page
Grade 3/4 - Di Floyd Strath PS Australia
We used Comic Life to make up a collection of photos as a highlights of the term page in our portfolios. Captions were added. Just a different and motivating way of publishing instead of using Word or Publisher.

Comic Touch:
Thinking from a Different Perspective
Comic touch is great for trying to get children to think from a different perspective. As part of a unit of work on the environment we used comic touch and photos taken on our bush walk to consider the environment from the perspective of the animals living in it.
Some of the children changed their approach and manner during our second bush walk and after we completed this task. They seemed to have a greater understanding of the need to enter the area quietly and to respect the areas they were visiting.
Quotes from our bearded dragon included
"How long are you visiting my home for ?"
"I hope you aren't thinking about staying for long."

ComicLife in Science
Comic Life is an excellent tool for writing up lab reports in science when a series of steps need to be recorded.
This makes the previous tedious task of writing reports fun.
Can't be easier than that!

Use comics to give students an opportunity to use their language skills in context.

Recount
I've used Comic Life with Year 5/6 students after an excursion to Canberra and the snow.
Teachers and students took many photos from which the students chose eight to put in the Comic Life template.
Using text boxes, the students then wrote their recount. They printed and also published to their iWeb intranet site.
It was a great way to have reluctant writers engaged in a task that was achievable.

Limit the graphics
Challenge students to tell a story using only one or two images. This Comic Life page is a real conversation I overheard between two year 8 students. It was created using a single image positioned differently in each frame. Limiting the graphics really challenges students to focus on the story they want to tell and how they can tell it. They also need to focus on the visual presentation of their graphic and how it can be used to best effect.

We used Comic Life to create a portfolio piece for Drama. The students had dressed as a character for Drama class. They used photos of themselves and added captions for the character.
The students enjoyed this idea and were quite creative with their various captions.

Our sixth graders create a dialogue with an inanimate object like a hairbrush, their laundry or homework. They write the dialogue in a word processing application and then turn it into a comic. They use PhotoBooth to take their own photos and add other graphics to represent the inanimate object.
