History
9/18/17 -First testing requested from SIPE (our insurance) due to lead discovered in water in a nearby school district.
9/22/17 - First testing completed by Abalone Coast Analytical (3 campuses)
10/9/17 - Report received and noted one water source (faucet outside of office) at VV at 5.9 ppb
10/10/17 - Email sent to principal, facilities supervisor, and superintendent regarding decision to shut off that water source though it was below state threshold of 15 ppb
10/10/17 - Mike Thomson requested further lead testing from La Cumbre Water Company for Vieja Valley and From City of Santa Barbara for Monte Vista and Hope.
10/13/17 - Board notified via Weekly Superintendent report regarding lead testing and resulting action (water fountain turned off and further testing requested).
10/17/17 - Reported about water testing at Board meeting in Superintendent Report
10/18/17 - Additional testing completed at Vieja Valley for La Cumbre Water Company. Done by Clinical Laboratory of San Bernardino
History
10/30/17 - Additional drinking water sources shut down on Vieja Valley campus even though they were below the actionable level based on the report from testing done on 10/18
11/3/17 - Met with La Cumbre Water company to discuss testing. Reported to the Board
11/8/17 - Additional testing by La Cumbre Water taken at Vieja Valley as a follow up
11/10/17 - Board updated with information from CSBA
11/27/17 - Received report from La Cumbre Water on 11/8/17 testing. No actionable items needed
11/29/17 City of Santa Barbara tested at Monte Vista and Hope
12/4/17 - Attended a webinar “Let’s Tackle School Drinking Water Quality! By National Drinking Water Alliance
12/11/17 - Reported on lead testing at Board meeting in Superintendent Report
1/3/18 - Received report from 11/29/17 testing at Monte Vista and Hope - no actionable items
7/24/18 - La Cumbre Water company installed new main water lines to Vieja Valley to improve water quality
12/6/19 - VV PTA purchased a waterfill station for Vieja Valley
Recent Actions
March 2022: New domestic and landscape backflows installed at Vieja Valley as suggested in previous report (took highest level action for remediation and removed copper pipe)
March 2022: Installed two wall-mount hydration stations in Kindergarten and Classroom building at Vieja Valley (4 total now)
Summer 2022: Addressed hard water, a contributor to higher lead content, during the Vieja Valley MPR remodel by adding a new water heater, replaced piping in the mechanical room, adding a new water softener and drain, and installing a recirculation pump.
2022 - Installed water fill stations at Hope MPR and Monte Vista K yard
Fall 2023 - Filtered water fill stations:
October 2023 - Filter added at pot-filler in VV production kitchen, tested on 10/13/23 and 10/24/23. Received results : The grab sample taken using “first draw” sampling methods (Sample #1) shows a lead concentration of only 1.3 micrograms per Liter (ug/L) or parts per billion (ppb), which is well below the 5 ppb target. The 30-second flush sample (#2) showed a lead concentration of 0.17 ppb, which is below the lab’s Practical Quantification Limit (PQL), and just above the Method Detection Limit (MDL) of 0.10 ppb.
November 2023 - District-wide Lead testing for 2023-24 school year to be completed (Thanksgiving break)
