5 Tips for choosing high school classes

Rigor

Interests

Expand

Requirements

Balance

Take courses that align w/ your interests & goals ie. a student interested in engineering should be taking advanced math & science courses.

Demonstrate your specialty by choosing classes that reinforce your intended major and prepare you for college-level work in that academic area.

Don’t be afraid to branch out and take a class or two in an area of interest that you may not have the chance to explore otherwise.

it’s okay to explore some classes outside of your core academic focus.

Students’ curriculum should increase in difficulty each year, and students should be maintaining good grades in those challenging courses

The most important thing to remember is you need to be challenged while also maintaining good grades.

Take on a course load that’s appropriate for your abilities and your time, and focus on making the best grades possible.

Don’t forget that there are graduation requirements you need to meet. First, meet with your school counselor & make sure that you’re taking the right courses & that you’re on track to meet all of your graduation requirements. If you’re missing a class or two, find a way to include it into your schedule without compromising the integrity of your curriculum’s rigor.

What should I be doing now?

Things to consider as you prepare for your junior year…

SLIDESMANIA.COM

40 of 47

The “Bad News”

The junior year is where you do all the hard work!

You need to start your college search, visit campuses, and think about where you want to apply!

Then spend the fall of your senior year actually applying!

SLIDESMANIA.COM

What are colleges looking for?

“There is no secret to getting in...

Stop looking for a gimmick.

Tune out the hype.

Study hard.

Take the toughest curriculum that you can.

The heart of the application is

– and has always been –

One’s academic preparation.”
