IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL NEEDS
Social emotional can be understood as the way that a child/adolescent expresses their emotions and engages with peers and adults in a social setting.
Examples include:
BEHAVIORAL WARNING SIGNS
Poor coping skills
Drop in grades
Truancy
Aggression/ angry outbursts
Lack of motivation
Mental health problems
WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDAL IDEATION �IT IS OKAY TO USE THE “S” WORD!
Here are signs to watch out for, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:
Talking or discussions about wanting to die
Researching ways to kill oneself
References to hopelessness or feeling as if life has no purpose
Feelings of being trapped or in unbearable pain
Feelings of being a burden to others
Increased alcohol or drug use
Sleep changes; either excessive sleep or insomnia
Isolation and withdrawal
Expressions of rage or a desire to seek revenge
Anxiety, agitation or recklessness
Extreme mood swings
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Show compassion and be supportive of your teen
Be available/accessible for your child to share whatever challenges they are facing
Reach out to school social worker/ counselors for a suicide screening if necessary
Find a local mental health professional to complete a psychiatric assessment/suicide screening
What do you already do that has been affective as a parent?
Ignoring mental health problems will not make them go away
Remember to seek help for yourself as a parent if needed.
Always Listen and take each suicide threat as if it is real.
Knowing the Warning signs and don’t ignore them.
