Question 3 and 4

Q3 Many unsure of what was being advertised.

Must be the FIRST thought.

Besides persuasive techniques

focus must also be given to teaching the

The d….y Question 5

Why, after 12 years in school, do many still not know terms such as ‘a complete sentence, concord, tense, noun …’? (2020 paper)

… malapropism, am……. ?????

  • Terms often used and tested only at cognitive level 1 (literal) – e.g. name the part of speech / what is ‘irony’.

  • A better cognitive level question (inference) would be – ‘Use a strong adjective to indicate a dislike for the man’.

The worst, poorest, foulest … most disturbing …

In my sample - 82% could not answer the

question to write a ‘complete sentence’.

Teach all terminology found in CAPs.

  • Often these terms are not assimilated into the overall learning and regular language use.
  • Using terms has become something outside the area of inevitable, usual, accepted knowledge.
  • Only becomes familiar to the candidates if the terms are used as part of regular-talk

Use the jargon of the trade!

Finally

  • Please continue to use previous papers.
  • Grade 8 and 9 teachers – the overall preparation to start as early as possible.
  • Start by teaching learners how to write a complete sentence.
  • To improve … by repetition.

Grade 12 teachers need to inform GET teachers.

10 of 11

The basics for answering this paper needs ‘to be cemented’ by Grade 10.

  • They MUST read more – give short pieces to read and test to see if they have comprehended. (essay/poem/…)
  • Do the analysis of visual literacy – advertisements/cartoons – continuously across Grades.
  • Set the example by using meta-language in class and out of class.
