Why we do the Mathematics Passport

  • To improve Mental Maths skills.

  • Progression and consistency across Year Groups.

  • Clear framework for children to follow.

  • Consolidation of Number Skills.

How it works

  • The Mathematics Passport will now become an additional homework for all children from FS2 to Year 6.

  • We are currently following a ‘slow roll out’ system across the Primary School.

  • FS2, Year 1 and 2 are currently beginning and Years 4, 5 and 6 have already begun using this new system. Year 3 will follow soon.

  • Children will be able to access homework sheets on an appropriately levelled Mathematics target via the Mathematics Passport Google Site (teachers will inform the children of which target they are on).

  • Children should complete a range of questions, relating to their individualised target, each night at home for their homework.

  • There are many ways that the children can learn their target:

  1. They could access the Mathematics Passport Google Site where there are currently 200 questions per individualised target that could be printed, children could record their answers on paper or you could call out these questions.

  • They could access the Mathematics Passport Google Site where there are games to support each individualised target.

  • You might have another way to help support your child such as ‘calling out questions in the car’ or playing games using cards etc.

What to expect

  • The best way to learn mental maths is to use consistent practice with specific techniques like:

  • breaking down numbers
  • using visualisation
  • learning tricks (doubling/halving)
  • playing games
  • focussing on pattern recognition

all while building a strong foundation through repetition, oracy and patience.

  • FS2 and KS1 will decide when to test in class.

  • KS2 are tested in class, usually at the end of a week, to assess if they have achieved their target.

  • If children pass their target 2 weeks in a row at 100%, they can then move onto the next target.

  • If children are achieving 9 out of 10, they will need to achieve this 3 weeks in a row before they move onto the next target.

  • If children are not achieving 9/10 or 10/10, the teacher might decide to move the child onto a new target and revisit the current target at a later date.

  • The tests are NOT timed.

The Re-Tests

When a child has completed a full continent, they will be given a re-test sheet to make sure they have retained this knowledge or if they would need to re-do a target.

Homework

The coverage sheet of each Continent may be sent home but it is also accessible on the Google Site. Parents can check this information for future learning targets.

How can parents help?

  • Check your child's target at the start of the week and ensure they understand the skill they are covering – check they understand the vocabulary used.

  • Go over examples of the target with your child. Some examples can be found on the Mathematics Passport Google Site.

  • If your child is struggling to pick up a Number Skill, inform their class teacher.

  • Mark your child’s work every night to ensure they have fully understood their target. If their work is not marked, your child may be making consistent mistakes and therefore fail their test at school.

  • If you are unsure of the methods that we use at school, the Calculation Policy is on the Parent Notices Site for you to view.
