SEL IN DISTRICT 39 - SEVENTH GRADE

The SEL learning objectives in District 39 are built around 6 core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. These are based on the core competencies outlined by CASEL, Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Teachers use a Responsive Classroom approach to building classroom communities, and address social-emotional skills in a Resoponsive Advisory, which happens regularly throughout the week. In Seventh Grade we use lessons from the Responsive Advisory Lesson book to address the objectives listed here.

Responsive classroom is an approach to instruction and classroom community that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness. Components of Responsive Classroom include the Responsive Advisory Meeting, and interactive learning structures to support relationship building and positive decision making.

You can see that the 7th Grade objectives include themes of respecting differences and understanding intent and impact, recognizing bias and standing up for others, setting personal and academic goals, and connecting with others. Under each objective it lists the competencies that are addressed by that objective.
