The Global and Local Education Crisis

Education Crisis:

260 million children worldwide are out of school (UNESCO).

Declining STEM performance globally, with a significant interest gap in STEM.

Kenya: Learners perform poorly in Mathematics and Integrated Science (25th–50th percentile).

Teacher shortages and training gaps in STEM education, especially in underserved regions.

Kenya: only 21% of all teachers have formal STEM training

The Urgency for Change:

Innovative, tech supported skill focused methods are needed.

Core Hypothesis

  • Standardized, pedagogy-driven, tech-integrated lesson designs can:

    • Bridge the gap between Competency-Based Education (CBE) policy intent and day-to-day classroom practice.
    • Enable low-capacity teachers to deliver complex content confidently and consistently.
    • Seamlessly embed 21st-century skill development into STEM subjects without requiring additional instructional time.
    • Maximize the value of EdTech tools by aligning them to specific learning outcomes and pedagogical goals.

Case Study: Low-Resource JSS – Meru County

Population Sample

    • Teachers: 35 Junior Secondary teachers trained in STEM pedagogy and EdTech integration
    • Students: 1143 learners

School Context

    • School in Meru County
    • Limited digital infrastructure and STEM resources

5 of 12

BASELINE

  • Baseline data showed that learners performed significantly lower in Mathematics and Integrated Science (25th–45th percentile) compared to other subjects (60th–88th percentile).

6 of 12

Why STEM Was at the 25th Percentile

  • Key contributing factors:
    • Lack of structured, integrated lesson planning
    • Disconnected use of EdTech — tools used as add-ons, not aligned to learning outcomes
    • Low teacher confidence in delivering STEM content effectively

Designer-Technician Model, Pedagogy-Driven Approach

Centralized STEM blueprint lessons

Delivered locally by empowered teachers

Lessons integrate 21st-century skills (4Cs)

EdTech is a support layer, not the foundation
