Hooks push the ring out ⇒ can’t intake a ring properly

How can we make the ring actually get hooked on?

Intake - Problem

5 of 35

First stage ⇒ Flaps

Flaps are able to pull rings in efficiently.

What are some benefits of flexible flaps to intake?

What is cantilevering?

Cantilevered

Not cantilevered

  • Supported on one side
  • Supported on both sides

Do You Spot a Difference?

13 of 35

Why is this important

  • Know when to cantilever

Cantilevering creates:

  • a compact design

BUT

  • a weaker design

What is a screw joint

A screw joint

  • utilizes screws to allow components to rotate along the rounded edge
  • Cannot be used with active motors

Question

What is the difference between using a screw joint and axle?

21 of 35

Screw Joints & Axles

  • Axle rotates with the gear
  • Screw stays stationary

Question

Why do you think screw joints are important?

23 of 35

Why are screw joints important?

Pros to Screw Joints

  • can hold more load
  • more compact
  • can be cantilevered
  • has less friction

Screws joints and axles can usually be used in the same cases, however it is up to you to decide which is optimal.

Application to Drive Train

  • On drivetrain, we use screw joints for the idler gears which decreases the friction overall.

How do you support a joint properly?

  • Using parts like C channels, L channels, polycarb, etc. to support structures that joints are mounted to
  • reduces friction by keeping mounts straight

Question

How do you think friction affects the efficiency of a mechanism?

27 of 35

How does friction affect the joint in an assembly?

  • makes assemblies less efficient
  • require more wattage for less work

How to avoid high friction:

  • have the correct amount of spacing on your joints
  • don’t use bent metal
  • triangle braces
