CONTEXT

Why Faculty Development Matters Now

“The most important factor in the success of higher education institutions is the quality and engagement of its faculty.”

— NEP 2020, Chapter 13.1 (paraphrased)

  • NEP 2020 repositions the teacher as the single greatest lever for transforming Indian higher education.
  • Faculty are expected to move from single-role ‘lecturers’ to multi-role professionals — teacher, mentor, researcher, and community partner.
  • A knowledge economy needs teachers who can keep learning: new pedagogy, new technology, new fields of enquiry, and new social responsibilities.
  • Sustained, structured Professional Development (PD) is therefore not optional CPD — it is the engine of policy implementation.

TEACHING

What Do We Mean by Teaching Development?

Moving from ‘content delivery’ to designed learning experience

The Old Assumption

  • Subject mastery alone makes a good teacher
  • One lecture format fits every class and cohort
  • Assessment is something added at the end of a course
  • Teaching skill is fixed after initial appointment

The NEP 2020 Shift

  • Pedagogy, curriculum design and assessment literacy are core faculty competencies
  • Flexible, multidisciplinary, experiential and technology-enabled teaching
  • Continuous formative assessment integrated into everyday teaching
  • Teaching is a craft to be renewed through 50+ hours of CPD every year

TEACHING

NEP 2020 Provisions for Teaching Excellence

Key paragraphs that redefine the teaching role in higher education

NEP 2020 Reference

Provision for Faculty Development

Ch.12.2

Institutions and faculty get autonomy over curriculum, pedagogy and assessment within a broad qualifications framework.

Ch.13.4

Faculty design their own pedagogy, choose readings, assignments and assessments within the approved framework.

Ch.11.6

Pedagogy must emphasise communication, discussion, debate, and cross-disciplinary thinking, not one-way lecturing.

Ch.15.5

The 4-year integrated B.Ed. models the dual-major, practice-based teacher preparation expected at every stage.

Ch.23

Extensive, evaluated use of technology — online tools, virtual labs, blended formats — in everyday teaching.

TEACHING

Strategies to Strengthen Teaching Practice

Three practical moves every teacher can start this term

1

Redesign for Outcomes

  • Write 3-4 clear learning outcomes before designing any lecture or unit
  • Align activities and assessment directly to those outcomes
  • Share outcomes with students on day one

2

Diversify Pedagogy

  • Blend lecture with discussion, case study, flipped classroom and peer teaching
  • Use experiential and project-based tasks, not only theory
  • Rotate methods across a semester to reach diverse learners

3

Reflect & Renew

  • Keep a brief teaching journal after each class or module
  • Seek peer observation and student feedback each semester
  • Convert every FDP / workshop into one concrete classroom change

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — TEACHING

TEACHING

Tools & Innovative Pedagogies

Instruments NEP 2020 expects teachers to master

Academic Bank of Credit (ABC)

Design modular, credit-bearing units that support multiple entry/exit and credit transfer.

Blended & ODL formats

Combine classroom teaching with SWAYAM/DIKSHA content for flexibility and reach.

Choice Based Credit System (revised)

Offer electives and flexible pathways; move to criterion-based grading.

Experiential pedagogy

Use case studies, projects, internships and community-based assignments.

Educational technology

Adopt smart classrooms, virtual labs and adaptive tools where they genuinely aid learning.

Bilingual / mother-tongue material

Prepare glossaries and bilingual notes to widen access for diverse learners.

TEACHING – TIP OF THE SESSION

One Change Per Class, Every Class

1

Start with the muddiest point

End each class by asking students to write the one idea that felt least clear. Open the next class with it — it costs two minutes and closes real gaps.

2

Teach in threes

Structure every session as tell → show → do. A short explanation, a worked example, then guided practice, keeps attention and builds retention.

3

Record one artefact

Keep one slide, rubric or activity from every class you teach. Over a year this becomes your own low-effort teaching portfolio.

4

Ask, don't assume

Run a 2-minute anonymous pulse-check mid-semester. Small, timely feedback prevents an entire course from drifting off-track.

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — LEARNING

14

16 of 96

LEARNING

What Do We Mean by Learner-Centred Development?

Shifting faculty attention from coverage to genuine learning

Common Pitfalls

  • Success measured by syllabus completed, not concepts understood
  • One-size-fits-all pacing regardless of learner readiness
  • Assessment mainly at the end, mainly through recall
  • Cognitive growth alone, with little attention to values or wellbeing

The NEP 2020 Shift

  • Holistic development — cognitive, social, ethical and emotional — for every learner
  • Flexible pathways, multiple entry/exit, and credit-based progression
  • Continuous, formative, competency-based assessment for learning
  • Faculty as mentors and guides, not only subject experts

LEARNING

Strategies to Improve Learning Outcomes

Practical shifts that make learning visible and durable

1

Know Your Learners

  • Run a short diagnostic at the start of every course
  • Group activities by readiness, interest or language need
  • Track a few at-risk learners individually each term

2

Make Thinking Visible

  • Use concept maps, think-pair-share and short reflective writing
  • Ask for reasoning, not only the final answer
  • Encourage peer explanation — teaching a peer deepens learning

3

Mentor Beyond the Classroom

  • Offer regular, visible office hours or mentoring slots
  • Connect academic advice with wellbeing and career guidance
  • Celebrate effort and improvement, not only top scores

LEARNING

Assessment & Feedback Reforms

From testing memory to assessing understanding

Element

What Good Practice Looks Like

Purpose

Assessment for learning first; assessment of learning second.

Format

Blend of quizzes, projects, portfolios, presentations, and open-book / applied tasks.

Frequency

Continuous and formative through the course, not concentrated at one final point.

Feedback

Timely, specific, and actionable — returned while the learning is still fresh.

Reporting

Holistic, 360-degree progress records covering cognitive, affective and psychomotor growth.

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — LEARNING

18

20 of 96

LEARNING – TIP OF THE SESSION

Make Feedback a Conversation

1

The two-minute rule

Give at least one piece of specific feedback within two minutes of an answer — delayed praise or correction loses its power to shape learning.

2

Feed-forward, not just feedback

Alongside what went wrong, always name the very next action the learner should try. Advice beats evaluation.

3

Let students self-assess first

Before you grade, ask learners to rate their own work against the rubric. It builds metacognition and cuts grading disputes.

4

Close the loop publicly

Share anonymised patterns from an assessment with the whole class — common errors taught once save re-teaching many times.

RESEARCH

Why Research Matters for Every Faculty Member

Research as a habit of mind, not only a specialist activity

Common Barriers

  • Research seen as separate from and competing with teaching load
  • Very limited exposure to competitive, peer-reviewed funding
  • Weak research culture at many state and affiliated institutions
  • Publication pressure without adequate mentoring or ethics training

The NEP 2020 Shift

  • Research is a core-requisite for good education, not an optional extra
  • A National Research Foundation (NRF) to seed research at every institution
  • Undergraduate research and internships built into the curriculum itself
  • Faculty career progression explicitly rewards research quality and impact

RESEARCH

Strategies to Build Research Capacity

From first idea to sustained research programme

1

Start Small, Start Now

  • Turn one classroom question into a small, doable study
  • Co-author with a mentor or across departments
  • Present at a departmental seminar before a big conference

2

Build a Support System

  • Join or form a research group / writing circle
  • Seek NRF, UGC or institutional seed-grant support
  • Use ICSSR / ICMR / ICAR schemes relevant to your field

3

Protect Time & Quality

  • Block a fixed weekly slot exclusively for research
  • Track calls for proposals and conference deadlines
  • Choose UGC-CARE / peer-reviewed, ethical outlets only

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — RESEARCH

24

26 of 96

RESEARCH

Research Ethics & Quality Publication

Integrity is what makes research count

  • Obtain informed consent and, where needed, institutional ethics clearance before data collection.
  • Acknowledge every source; paraphrase and cite rather than reproduce text — avoid plagiarism at every stage.
  • Disclose authorship contribution and conflicts of interest honestly and completely.
  • Publish in UGC-CARE listed or genuinely peer-reviewed journals — verify a journal before submitting, never after.
  • Avoid predatory journals and conferences that promise fast, fee-based publication with no real review.
  • Report data and findings transparently, including null or inconvenient results.

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — RESEARCH

25

27 of 96

RESEARCH – TIP OF THE SESSION

Protect a Weekly Hour for Deep Work

1

Guard one non-negotiable slot

Block 60-90 uninterrupted minutes every week purely for reading, writing or analysis — treat it like a class you cannot miss.

2

Write before you feel ready

Draft the introduction and outline before data collection ends. A rough draft early beats a perfect draft that never starts.

3

Track calls, not just deadlines

Keep a running list of NRF, UGC, ICSSR and conference calls relevant to your field — opportunities missed silently are opportunities lost.

4

Mentor one junior colleague

Co-guide a student or early-career colleague through one small study — it multiplies your own research culture across the institution.

What Do We Mean by Extension?

The third mission: service, outreach and societal engagement

Often Overlooked

  • Treated as an add-on activity for annual reports, not real practice
  • Left to a handful of ‘NSS/NCC-type’ staff rather than every teacher
  • Rarely linked back into curriculum, teaching or research
  • Impact seldom documented or assessed meaningfully

The NEP 2020 Shift

  • Community engagement and service (seva) as part of a holistic education
  • Extension credited through internships, projects and value-based courses
  • Institutions expected to serve their local and regional community directly
  • Extension feeding back into teaching relevance and applied research

Strategies for Meaningful Extension Work

Making outreach substantive, not symbolic

1

Link to Curriculum

  • Design one credit-bearing community project per programme
  • Use local problems as case studies in the classroom
  • Involve students in NSS/NCC/Unnat Bharat style initiatives

2

Serve With Expertise

  • Offer free expert consultation to local schools, panchayats or NGOs
  • Run health, legal-literacy, digital-literacy or skill camps
  • Co-create solutions with the community, not just for it

3

Document & Feed Back

  • Record outreach as structured case studies, not just photographs
  • Feed community insights back into research questions
  • Report outcomes and impact, not only participation numbers

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan style village adoption

Long-term partnership with identified villages for sustained development support.

NSS / NCC / Yuva Clubs

Structured student volunteering with faculty mentorship and academic credit.

Community-Based / Service Learning courses

Academic credit tied to a genuine community project with reflection component.

Extension & Outreach Cells

A dedicated institutional cell to coordinate, track and document all outreach work.

Industry-Community Consultancy

Faculty expertise offered to local industry, artisans, farmers or self-help groups.

NEP 2020 Faculty PD — EXTENSION

32

34 of 96

EXTENSION – TIP OF THE SESSION

Turn One Outreach Visit Into Three Outcomes

1

Before you go: set a question

Walk in with one specific community question to explore — outreach without a question rarely turns into learning or research.

2

While there: co-create, don't just deliver

Ask the community what they need before offering what you planned. Genuine partnership outlasts one-off charity visits.

3

After you return: write it up

Convert every visit into a short reflective note within a week — for teaching examples, a possible paper, and the institutional record.

4

Bring students along

Even a single supervised student volunteer multiplies the reach and gives them credit-worthy, real-world experience.

Orientation Strategies for Faculty

How institutions build awareness and ownership

1

Build Shared Vocabulary

  • Start every orientation with the policy’s guiding principles
  • Distinguish NEP from earlier policies clearly
  • Use the 5+3+3+4 diagram as a common reference point

2

Localise the Vision

  • Map your institution’s current practice against the vision
  • Identify 2–3 State-specific implementation priorities
  • Invite the IQAC to anchor a standing NEP cell

3

Sustain the Conversation

  • Run short refreshers, not one-off sessions
  • Circulate one-page briefs after each major GoI update
  • Celebrate small wins as they happen

NEP THEMES – TIP OF THE SESSION

Open With the 'Why', Not the 'What'

1

Start with the problem NEP solves

Before listing provisions, spend five minutes on the learning crisis and fragmentation NEP was designed to fix — it makes every later detail make sense.

2

Use one running example

Track a single hypothetical student from Anganwadi to Ph.D. through the whole orientation — abstract structure becomes a lived story.

3

Distinguish policy from law

Remind participants NEP is a policy framework; specific provisions become real through separate Acts, regulations and schemes.

4

End with a personal question

Ask each participant to name one paragraph of NEP most relevant to their own role — ownership starts with relevance.

School Education Reforms & Foundational Literacy

Building the base: from Anganwadi to Grade 12

The Challenge

  • Over 5 crore elementary students lacked foundational literacy and numeracy
  • No structured system covered children aged 3–6 before Grade 1
  • High dropout after Grade 5 and especially after Grade 8
  • Curriculum overloaded with content, weak on conceptual understanding

The NEP 2020 Response

  • 5+3+3+4 structure: Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary stages
  • Universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) targeted by 2025
  • ECCE extended down to age 3 through Anganwadis and Balvatika
  • School complexes/clusters for shared resources and better governance

NEP THEMES – TIP OF THE SESSION

Make the 5+3+3+4 Structure Visual

1

Draw it, don't just describe it

A simple age-banded diagram of the four stages communicates the restructuring faster than any paragraph of text.

2

Use the '85% by age 6' statistic

This single, memorable fact explains why ECCE investment is treated as urgent, not optional, in NEP.

3

Name the target year

Anchor foundational literacy discussions to the 2025 national target — urgency drives attention.

4

Ask about local dropout data

Participants engage more once the Grade 9–12 dropout numbers are made locally specific rather than national averages.

Use the 'Nalanda & Takshashila' Frame

1

Root restructuring in Indian history

NEP explicitly invokes ancient multidisciplinary universities — this frame makes 'restructuring' feel like renewal, not disruption.

2

Clarify autonomy is graded, not instant

Emphasise the 15-year, benchmark-based glide path — it reduces anxiety about sudden loss of affiliation support.

3

Separate regulation from reality

Note that HECI remains at the proposal stage in law even as its functions are being progressively operationalised — track official updates.

NEP THEMES – TIP OF THE SESSION

Explain Credits With a Bank Analogy

1

Use the 'bank account' metaphor literally

Credits are deposited, stored and can be withdrawn (transferred) later — the ABC name itself is the teaching tool.

2

Show a real exit-point example

Walk through one student path: 1-year certificate, 2-year diploma, 3-year degree, 4-year degree with research — concrete beats abstract.

3

Flag common confusion early

Multiple exit does not mean lowered standards — each exit level has its own defined learning outcomes.

4

Connect to NCrF, not just ABC

Mention that vocational and prior-learning credits can now count too — this reassures vocational and open-learning staff.

Any digital-first plan should open with how it will reach students who lack devices or connectivity — NEP treats this as a first-order concern.

3

NEP THEMES – TIP OF THE SESSION

Introduce ANRF as NRF's Legal Form

1

Clarify NRF vs ANRF explicitly

NEP 2020 proposed the NRF; the Anusandhan National Research Foundation Act, 2023 gave it statutory form — naming both avoids confusion.

2

Emphasise 'seed and mentor', not just 'fund'

ANRF’s mandate to build capacity at under-resourced institutions matters as much as its grant-making — don't let the session imply funding is only for elite universities.

3

Use the 0.7%-of-GDP statistic sparingly

It's a powerful opening fact, but pair it immediately with a positive, local action so the session doesn't end on discouragement.

4

Invite one small win to be shared

Ask if any colleague present has a recent grant, publication or student project to share — peer example outperforms abstract encouragement.

NEP THEMES

NEP 2020 ORIENTATION · THEME 10 OF 10

Governance, Regulation, Financing & Implementation Roadmap

Making the policy real: money, machinery and monitoring

The Challenge

  • Public education expenditure historically far below the 6% of GDP target
  • Overlapping regulators created conflicts of interest and confusion
  • Weak transparency and public disclosure by many institutions
  • Under-spending of allocated education budgets at the district level

The NEP 2020 Response

  • Explicit commitment to raise public education spending toward 6% of GDP
  • Functional separation of regulation, accreditation, funding and standard-setting
  • 'Light but tight' regulation built on public self-disclosure and audit
  • Phased, jointly monitored implementation by Centre, States and institutions

Orientation Strategies for Faculty

How institutions build awareness and ownership

1

Know Your Own Numbers

  • Review your institution’s current public disclosure practices
  • Check your IDP against actual annual progress
  • Discuss where local implementation lags or leads

2

Strengthen Institutional Governance

  • Clarify roles across academic, administrative and finance committees
  • Practice transparent, timely public disclosure
  • Build a standing NEP monitoring cell with IQAC

3

Advocate Constructively

  • Raise resourcing gaps through proper institutional channels
  • Share implementation feedback with State NEP cells
  • Document what is working, not only what is missing

NEP THEMES – TIP OF THE SESSION

End Any Orientation With 'What Happens Next'

1

Always name the monitoring mechanism

Whatever the topic, tell participants who reviews progress and how often — policy feels real once its accountability loop is visible.

2

Distinguish target from guarantee

The 6%-of-GDP figure is a long-standing aspiration reaffirmed by NEP, not a legally guaranteed budget line — frame it honestly.

3

Use your own IDP as the closing exhibit

If your institution has a public Institutional Development Plan, walk through it briefly — it makes 'implementation' concrete and local.

4

Close every orientation with next steps

End with one shared commitment and a date for a follow-up session — orientation without follow-through fades quickly.

BRINGING IT TOGETHER

The Integrated Five-Dimension Model

Each dimension feeds and strengthens the others

Teaching → Learning

Better-designed teaching directly produces deeper, more durable student learning.

Learning → Research

Curious, questioning learners and classroom problems become the seeds of new research.

Research → Extension

Research findings become usable knowledge, tools and solutions for the community.

Extension → Teaching

Community problems return to the classroom as live, relevant case studies.

N

The 5th Dimension — NEP 2020 Themes

Policy literacy is the foundation layer beneath Teaching, Learning, Research and Extension — orientation in NEP’s own themes is what makes the other four dimensions coherent and purposeful.

REALITY CHECK

Challenges in Implementation

Naming the friction honestly improves the plan

  • Heavy teaching and administrative load leaves little protected time for research or extension.
  • Uneven access to funding, mentoring and infrastructure across institution types and regions.
  • Resistance to change in assessment culture, both from faculty habit and student expectation.
  • Limited faculty exposure to structured CPD, especially in smaller and rural institutions.
  • Extension work often undervalued in appraisal compared with teaching and publication counts.
  • Fast-moving technology can outpace institutional capacity to train and support faculty.

WAY FORWARD

Recommendations Going Forward

For Individual Faculty

Set one concrete goal per dimension each year; keep a simple portfolio; seek and give mentoring.

For Departments

Build peer-observation and research-mentoring circles; recognise extension work in workload planning.

For Institutions

Protect CPD time through timetabling; align appraisal with all five dimensions, not teaching alone.

For Policy Makers

Ensure equitable NRF and CPD access across public, private, rural and urban institutions.
