Using Restorative Practices in the Classroom While Teaching and Upholding Behavior Expectations

2 of 51

3 of 51

What I hope we get out of today. Our objective:

Using a skill wheel, I will be able to determine where I am at when it comes to teaching and reinforcing behavior expectations while maintaining restorative practices.

I will fill out my organizer to identify strategies and make goals based off of my skill wheel.

I will be able to contribute to the development of Cyprus High’s behavior matrix

Definitions PBIS:

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.

Definitions: Collective Implementation

The connection to school-wide expectations and systems to the classroom. PBIS works best when it is implemented within a school-wide PBIS framework. Expectations in the classroom should mirror the expectations at the building level. Aligning classroom expectations with school-wide expectations ensures students not only understand how the classroom works, but also gain a better understanding of what they need to do school-wide.

Proactively Plan For Desired Behaviors.

When building a lesson, anticipate potential undesired behaviors and embed opportunities to teach behavior expectations.

Ask yourself:

Am I teaching a new skill that might be difficult for students?

Are there tasks and situations that have been difficult for your class or for a specific student?

Then prepare pre-corrections and prompts to embed into your lesson providing an opportunity to teach behavior expectations proactively.

Think universal. As you develop these pre-corrections and prompts, think about how you can present them in different ways. Remember to think beyond verbal pre-corrections and prompts to meet the needs of all learners.
