Our Drone Project

Why?

Drones can be used nearly anywhere, and their ability to maneuver three dimensional space enables them to be a unique addition to motor skill practices, defense trainings, and outdoor amenities. There is an additional layer of excitement and unpredictability to the game, challenging players to think on their feet and act quickly to hit the drone with their laser gun. With our innovative use of drones and custom-designed flight patterns, we've created a truly unique and thrilling gaming experience that will keep players on the edge of their toes. We also hope to test use cases in other areas, such as military trainings and motor skills practice/refinement.

Our Idea

We combined drones and laser sensors to create two different features. The first feature challenges players to hit the drone with the laser sensor as many times as possible within a set time limit. The second feature requires players to hit a rapidly moving drone with the laser sensor in order to deactivate it. The different patterns in each game provide variety and added challenge for users.

Hardware

  • Used IR Sensors and Emitters to detect when drone was hit by laser
  • When laser hits drone, connect between IR sensors is established
  • Triggers drone to simulate “being hit” and temporarily disables the movement
  • Creates a realistic and interactive experience
  • Could NOT connect to drone and access data – but may be possible in the future

Software

  • Each level was created as a “skill” to get the drone to move in a specific way
  • Shown to the left is our work around for not being able to directly access hardware data within API.
    • We count example successful hits ourselves
  • Otherwise, 3 files are required to make any skill, and these 3 files are all uploaded to SkyDio’s SDK to be uploaded to drones and simulated
  • Check GitHub for rest of code

The Future of Drone Technology

  • Drones can help gather information in high-risk situations without putting people in danger.
  • Improvements in drone technology will enable them to operate in more challenging environments and gather more detailed information.
  • Drones can facilitate data sharing and collaboration among people in different locations, helping to address high-risk situations more effectively.
  • The development of drone swarms, in which multiple drones work together to perform complex tasks, has the potential to revolutionize industries such as construction and manufacturing.

Our Vision

We believe the future of drone technology is one where drones, paired with advanced sensors, can have a transformative impact in high-risk environments where time is of the essence.

In particular, we see great potential for drones to aid in search and rescue operations, where traditional search methods can be slow, dangerous, and potentially life-threatening. Drones equipped with sensors such as thermal imaging cameras, and LiDAR can capture real-time data from the disaster site, providing emergency responders with a more comprehensive understanding of the situation. Machine learning algorithms can analyze this data and provide insights that may not be immediately apparent to human analysts.

The intersection of sensors on drones and machine learning has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of industries and applications beyond emergency response. As both technologies continue to evolve and become more sophisticated, we can expect to see even more innovative applications in the future.
