Technology EducationSystem’s Model

  • Attendance
  • Discuss what a system is.
  • Identify some examples of systems working together.
  • Discuss what the Universal Systems Model is and how we can use it.
  • Break down various items into the Universal Systems Model.

Systems

  • A system is a group of interrelated components that work together to achieve a desired goal.
  • An easy example of systems working together is a flashlight.

3 of 12

  • Parts of the flashlight include the bulb, battery, case, and switch.
  • Will the flashlight work if one of the parts breaks?
  • Just like the parts of a flashlight work together, so do the systems of the designed world.

  • Another example of a system could be the human body systems.
    • Respiratory system
    • Circulatory system
    • Digestive system
    • Nervous system
    • Skeletal system
    • Etc.

Everything that exists around us can be broken down into the Universal Systems Model.

6 of 12

  • Are the things that are put into an object or operation in order to allow it to be complete.
  • These resources include:
    • Tools and Machines
    • Materials
    • People
    • Energy
    • Information
    • Capitol (money)
    • Time

Inputs

7 of 12

  • Are the actions taken with the inputs.
  • They include:
    • Physical- cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, etc.
    • Chemical- mixing things together to change them
    • Heat- using heat to change the shape and properties
    • Analysis- working with data and information

Processes

8 of 12

  • Are what is created as a result of the processes.
  • They include:
    • Expected*
    • Unexpected*
    • Planned*
    • Unplanned*
    • Manufactured Goods
    • Scrap, Waste, and Pollution

Outputs

9 of 12

  • Is the information that is present after each of the steps.
  • They include:
    • Problems encountered
    • Environmental Impacts
    • Future Impacts
  • Information from the feedback goes back to the Inputs and Processes to make improvements to the Output.

Size up the System worksheet

  • Divide the class into groups and assemble together around the room.
  • Once in your group, read the story together.
  • Then identify and record the Inputs, Processes, Outputs, and Feedback.
  • After some time we will reassemble in your seats to discuss your Universal Systems Model results.
