MTSS Overview
MTSS is a framework to identify struggling students early and intervene. It is not a gateway to EC.
MTSS/Success Committee
Harlacher et al. (2014) described the six key principles of the MTSS framework:
All students are capable of grade-level learning with adequate support.
MTSS is rooted in proactivity and prevention.
The system utilizes evidence-based practices.
Decisions and procedures are driven by school and student data.
The degree of support given to students is based on their needs.
Implementation occurs school-wide and requires stakeholder collaboration.
MTSS is thought of as a triangle with three “Tiers”
Components of MTSS
Universal Screening
Tiered Approach
Evidence-Based Interventions
Progress Monitoring
Data-Based Decision-Making
Parent Involvement
It is the beginning of the year. Where do I start with a student that is already in the MTSS process?

Once you receive the name(s) of your MTSS Students for the new year:
How long does MTSS take? What if I think a student needs to be in MTSS?
Unless an extreme circumstance, request for MTSS need 6 weeks of consistent, documented data points.
MTSS will be different for each student
Interventions are provided for 4-8 weeks at a time, decided during team meeting (4 weeks for new to Tiller students)
Students may receive multiple rounds
It is not unusual for students to spend 1-2 years in MTSS

Writing Goals
The MTSS Committee will work with you to write measurable goals.
Example Reading Goal: After reading an instructional level narrative text the student will retell the story with a clear beginning, middle and end in 4 out of 5 trails in X consecutive weeks.
Example Math Goal: Given a set of 20 numbers the student will identity at least 16 out of 20 numbers in 4 out of 5 trials in “X” consecutive weeks.
Example Behavior Goal: When presented with a frustrating situation the student will choose an appropriate strategy independently from a list of preapproved strategies to regulate their emotions in order to rejoin the class in 10 or less minutes in 4 out of 5 opportunities in X consecutive weeks.
