In New Zealand there were two types of Governments. One was the Maori authority system and the other is the British Settler Government system. The Maori system is when, Tapu was important for protecting people, objects, and land. People were responsible for their whanau. Whereas the British Settler Government System is when people are innocent until proven guilty and there were set punishments for breaking the laws. This matters because, they are different systems and its important to know what NZ and British has been in the past.
