Book Dash - Arielle

🎯 Successes:�

  • Planning for a different Book Dash model for May 2025 - will be partially at CW 25 & partially online
  • Thank you SSI for their support of this!

πŸ˜₯ Challenges:

  • Funding changes mean we're looking at different models for Book Dash participation, activities, & support for 2025

πŸ’ͺ Call to action:

  • Interested in helping to organise the May or November 2025 Book Dash? Volunteer for the planning committee!
  • Take a look at the #0-book-dash-nov24 issue and PR label to help finish off Nov's work

πŸŽ‰ Celebrations:

  • Thank you to Esther Plomp, outgoing Book Dash WG chair!
  • New chair: Arielle Bennett, with agreed term limit maximum of 2 years

Translation & Localisation - Batool

🎯 Successes:

  • We were on temp pause Dec-January. We are resuming all localisation calls. We have onboarding call on 26th of Feb (next week).
  • We are reviewing mechanism (especially the transparency) by which team members take in leading roles in localisation working group (relate to the governance).

πŸ˜₯ Challenges:

  • Multi-deployment remains a challenge and we need to revisit it with the infrastructure group!

πŸ’ͺ Call to action:

  • Andrea has stepped down from co-leading the localisation working group (Thank you so much Andrea for all hard work!). Therefore, we will open a call for everyone to nominate individuals as co-lead the localisation and translation.

πŸŽ‰ Celebrations:

  • We (Sandy and Richie) are delivering a talk at FOSS Backstage on 11 March.
  • I am joining Open Science retreat in SZ, it’s unconference where I will be reflecting on different topics including transdisciplinarity, localisation & translation.

Accessibility - Liz

🎯 Successes:�

  • Accessibility Policy continues to be promoted, discussed, and cited!
  • Discussing how we might be involved with refreshed Book Dash format

πŸ˜₯ Challenges:

  • Member retention & recruitment (including for Steering Committee)
  • Time commitment for volunteer-led group
  • Funding to work more on this!

πŸ’ͺ Call to action:

  • Further embed access-centered practices across community & advocacy for allyship
  • Need for community-led discussion around location for access-related practices (should it be within the guide for ethics or a separate guide?)
  • Need for discussion about location of Accessibility Policy in guide (currently in Community Handbook)

πŸŽ‰ Celebrations:

  • Our accessibility policy was finally merged! Over 17 reviewers, 100s of reviews over 2 year process
  • Liz Hare and the Working Group were awarded a High Commendation in the Hidden REF competition

Infrastructure - Jim

  • Migration to Jupyter Book 2
  • PR opened to add no alt-text warnings in MyST/Jupyter Book

  • There are many small differences in Jupyter Book 2 that need addressing

πŸ’ͺ Call to action:

  • Please report any bugs/rendering errors you find in the new build
  • Ask us if you find merge conflicts that you think are related to the Jupyter Book migration

πŸŽ‰ Celebrations:

  • Huge effort from the team to get the build working with Jupyter Book 2
  • We’ve have a great experience working with the Jupyter Book and MyST MD communities
