I know that it is my struggles that have made me stronger, and these I value far more than any successes. My students, and my own children, live with the result of this...for I try each day to gently challenge, to tease, to irritate, to confound...never too much, but also never too little. I first saw this in action in my early 20s, as a roller hockey coach. This is a fast game, in which bodies are often impacted by pucks, sticks, other players and the rink itself. Over time, I came to see how tough my young players became, especially those that played competitively for more than two years. I remember one of my players, Jack, having a hard collision with the boards. I was refereeing at the time, so I skated over, ready to whistle down the play if he was hurt. As I got closer, he scraped himself off the rink, hustled back into the play, won the puck and scored a goal. Celebration over, he returned to the bench, where he promptly burst into tears. You see, the collision really had hurt him, but he'd had the mental strength, from prior experience, to do the hard thing for his team, before looking after himself. That’s resilience.
