The American Psychiatric Association (APA) recognizes that climate change poses a threat to public health, including the mental health of everyone, but in particular the most vulnerable and marginalized population.

The impacts of extreme events and the news about it’s impacts can causes stress and distress in our children.

What we can do - Resilience and Individual Actions

Support and build Trauma Informed Practices

Building healthy habits and a safe and equitable school climate

Build connections and community

Create strong social networks

Create a culture of respect and support

Learn and take steps to mitigate adverse impacts of climate change

Provide tools to cope and strategies to guide students through stressful situations

    • Quiet time in a natural setting (i.e. solo sit spot, or nature walk)
    • Journal writing or perspective writing

Social-emotional learning

American youth are consuming news and narratives of hate with too few opportunities to digest what is happening or to recognize their agency in creating meaningful change.

SEL refers to the life skills that support people in experiencing, managing, and expressing emotions, making sound decisions, and fostering interpersonal relationships.

Helps build communities that foster courageous conversations across differences so students can confront injustice, hate and inequity.

Curriculum and Instruction: Integrate SEL into lessons related to environmental problems and/or climate change. Provide ongoing opportunities for students to connect with nature. Adapt the Grow Outside SEL Framework to be integrated into curriculum and instruction.

Community and Culture: Support opportunities for collective SEL practices that relate to environmental and climate issues such as restorative circles, collective emotional processing, etc. Prioritize positive celebration and awareness days such as Earth Day.
