“In order to be successful,

professional learning communities (PLC’s)

must be embedded in the culture

of our school. Teamwork and collaboration

at Dearborn Public Schools is not an option,

it is who we are and what we do

as a part of our daily routine.”

Cultural Shifts- Becoming a

Professional Learning Community

  • “To put it as succinctly as possible, if you want to change and improve the climate and outcomes of schooling both for students and teachers, there are features of the school culture that have to be changed, and if they are not changed your well-intentioned efforts will be defeated”

Seymour Sarason: Taken From Robert Eaker PLC presentation.

Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2009)

1st order change vs. 2nd order change

  • 1st order change is incremental. It can be thought of as the next most obvious step to take.

  • 2nd order change is anything but incremental. It involves dramatic departures from the expected, both in defining a given problem and in finding a solution.

Two Different Process Issues Identified

Transcript Reviews

  • Counselors were not reviewing and auditing.

  • Inconsistent transcript

review process.

Students failing without advocacy/intervention

  • Counselors caseload too large.

  • No protocol or process for catching failures quickly.

20 of 37

Transcript Review Process

Problem:

  • Inconsistencies in auditing practices by high school and transcript errors
  • Lack of counselor “ownership of students”

Action:

  • Counselor PD includes transcript auditing practices and updates.
  • Counselors are expected to review each student’s transcript every semester
  • GIS and Executive Director audits every senior transcript

Graduation Intervention Specialists

Their primary role is to meet with students who are off-track and find solutions. This includes connecting with the student and his/her family to ensure the student remains on track and successfully graduates with his/her cohort.

Evolution Of The Role

With graduation rates at an all time high, GIS are focused on continuing this work and digging deep into why the last 5% are still unsuccessful.

After analyzing the students who did not graduate in the last 5 years, no commonalities were found. Students had individual circumstances which the GIS are now more in tune to and are working to identify these signs earlier and continue to find solutions.
