Become a kupu kaiako

INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a kupu and make a video in the style of our weekly

‘kupu o te wiki’ videos from the

NZ Post to help your fellow ākonga learn.

YOU MUST:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Speak clearly
  • Be creative
  • Make it fun to watch!

Show Us Your Mana

INSTRUCTIONS:

Record yourself doing one of the following:�

  • Waiata
  • Haka
  • Mihimihi
  • Taiaha
  • Poi
  • Having a conversation in te reo
  • Showing off your reo counting skills

Then… send your video to Matua Mark or Matua William. Winners will be announced over the speakers on Paraire.

KUPU poster

INSTRUCTIONS:

Get creative and design a poster to encourage people to use a new kupu. You might do it by hand on paper or online using canva, docs or slides.

Your poster should:

  • Have the kupu�
  • Illustrations related to the kupu�
  • Be eye catching!�

Show your kaiako that you know your pepeha by heart and earn yourself x5 ‘Rawe to Reo’ stars!

BONUS CHALLENGE:

Record yourself saying your pepeha off by heart and go in the draw to win a prize!

All you need to do it:

  1. Memorise your pepeha
  2. Record yourself saying it
  3. Send it to Matua Mark, Matua William or Whaea Cerys.
  4. Wait and see if you are a lucky winner!

Parakitihi Bingo

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Each person should�get a small whiteboard�or piece of scrap paper�and draw a 9 square�grid on it, like this:�
  2. As a group, choose a category - classroom objects, numbers or actions.�
  3. Choose 9 words from the categories list, put on kupu in each�part of the grid.�
  4. Click the category title to watch the spin the wheel video. You�might need to pause the video or search the meanings of some�kupu as you play. If the word picked is on your grid, then cross�it out. The first to get a line, then full bingo board wins.�

This task is for 2 or more people.

Create a kupu kemu

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. By yourself or with a buddy, choose a category or topic to make your cards about. Here are some ideas:
  2. Kai (food), weweru (clothes), whīra(feelings), numa (numbers), kara (colours).

  • Make a list of the words you know in that chosen topic, there should be at least 20. If you need help, you can use https://maoridictionary.co.nz/ to search more words and add them to your list.�
  • Draw 2 cards for each kupu. Include a picture of the thing and the name in Te Reo.�
  • Once you’re done, then you can start playing! Check out the next slide for some ideas of which games you could play with your new cards.

Create a kupu kemu

Snap!

  • Shuffle your deck of cards.�
  • Deal the cards so that everyone playing has an equal amount.�
  • Starting with the youngest person playing the game, take turns to place the cards face up in the middle of the table.�
  • If two cards in a row have matching words or pictures, then the first player to shout “snap!” wins the cards, and adds them to their pile.

Game ideas:

�Memory

  1. Shuffle the cards and lay them on the table, face down, in equal Starting with the youngest player, on each turn, a player turns over any two cards (one at a time).�
  2. If the two cards are a match (have the same kupu and picture) then the player gets to keep the cards, and that player gets another turn.�
  3. When a player turns over two cards that do not match, those cards are turned face down again (in the same place) and it becomes the next player’s turn.�
  4. The person with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.

Flashcards

  • Find a buddy�
  • Have your buddy shuffle the cards and then hold the stack, facing towards themself.�
  • You buddy will say either the english name for a word (that is on the card facing them), you should say what the word is in Te Reo. Or they could say the Te Reo word and you will say what it is in English.�
  • If you get it right, then you get the card. If you get it wrong, it goes back into the pile.

Show Us Your Mana!

Nau mai to this years Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 'Show Us Your Mana' competition!

You have 3 minutes to record yourself (individually, as a group or as a class) showing off your reo skills. This might be with a waiata, mihimihi, poi, mau rākau, tititoria or practicing having a conversation in Te Reo Māori. Once you've recorded it and are happy with the result, submit it!

The winners will be announced at the Week 10 assembly.
