Two Approaches to Modeling

Top Down Modeling (extracting parts)

Bottom Up Modeling (assembling parts)

Master Model Approach

Start with a NEW file, not the main part.

Insert the main part positioned at the Absolute Origin.

Don't Overconstrain Position

Just like constraints on sketches, positions can be overconstrained (broken).

Making a Subassembly

Assemblies can become sub-assemblies.

Accessing Datum Features

Use "Entire Part" as Reference Set

10 of 15

Assembling the O-Ring (tricky)

  • Use "Entire part" as reference set.
  • Align datum axis (Touch Align - Infer Center/Axis) with axis of spool.
  • Constrain datum plane at a distance from face of o-ring gland (.0625). You may need to use an "alternate solution."
  • To Hide the Datums, go to Format -> Layer Settings and make layer 61 invisible.

Moving Component

Use movement to see constraints work.

"Move Component"

  • Motion by constraints
