Student Evaluations of Teaching (SETs)

These matter for us: These influence hiring and retention decisions for myself and my TAs. Professors read each others’ SETs during reviews for reappointment and promotion.

These matter for you: What you write (much more than the scores) can help us improve our teaching. Other professors reading your comments for this class can get ideas for how to change their class (maybe you’ll be taking it next quarter or next year).

SETs aren’t a good way to grade teachers, but they are a reasonable way to have us all get feedback and improve our teaching across quarters and classes.

Let’s look at the current response rate… (Adam: click the link on Canvas)

Let’s look at what gets shown to an instructor after the quarter is over… (Adam: look for that pdf on your desktop)

Grade check-up

Lab activities: Your scores for the first 9 weeks should all be entered now.

CodeHS homework: Expect all of these scores to stay at zero. Check the CodeHS website for your progress instead.

Reading homework: Your scores should be up to date, but you have until Monday morning to complete more readings. (It’s okay to guess your responses!)

Exams: For the few people taking the alternative midterm, your grades will be updated during finals week.

Final exam: You’ll know your score as soon as you finish it (as before).

Let’s try some practice exam questions

Some TA will help me operate MentiMeter so you can vote on questions from your laptop/phone.
